like it ..... but not if you live ooop north and have broard northern accents !!!

cookielove · 16/03/2010 18:02

how is it prononced?

don't like it the way i am saying it in my head

megonthemoon · 16/03/2010 18:03

I knew a lovely Jago at college. One of the poshest people I've ever met, but in a lovely not at all wankerish, very charming and kind and considerate way Any mum would have been delighted if their daughter had brought him home!

Having said that, not sure it is a posh name as such (unlike Tarquin say which is one of those posh people only names) so don't think you need to worry about inverted snobbery or sounding too posh etc.

I like it, and is on my list for DC2 if a boy.

worzella · 16/03/2010 18:03

the j is pronounce as in Jack

lifeas3plus1 · 16/03/2010 18:04

We have a Jago at one of the baby groups I go to. It's pronounced Jay-go.

I like it. Only just heard of one other little boy named it so obviously not too popular.

Missus84 · 16/03/2010 18:05

Pronounced pretty much as written - Jay-Go. I've never met one in real life, but I believe it's Cornish. And we're in Bristol so no northern accents to worry about!

megonthemoon · 16/03/2010 18:06

I think it is cornish for James.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/03/2010 18:15

I know a lovely one aged 6. Pronounced Jay-go.

MamaLazarou · 16/03/2010 19:41

Lovely name. Much underused. Is it the Anglicised version of Diego?

Scrudd · 16/03/2010 19:44

I was going to have a jago, but had a girl instead, so we called the dog jago instead [grain]

I know of one little boy called jago, and one other dog. Both in Bristol, funnily enough.

pixierara · 16/03/2010 19:44

love it, love it! Really wanted to call DS2 Jago but DH vettoed

Missus84 · 16/03/2010 20:08

Not sure about Diego, but wonder if it's related to Iago?

Glad it's had a positive reception! Unusual but not weird I hope.

i live in cornwall and it is very popular indeed down here!

it is the equivalent of Tiago in Portugal/Spain, and James in rest of UK.
i think it's lovely!

Love it too.

[Will file it away, along with Miles, for my next two imaginary babies ]

bellissima · 17/03/2010 10:03

70s anorak nickname for Jackie and other names like that.

CrankyTwanky · 17/03/2010 14:24

This is my choice of boys name! Love it soooo much. I'm 99% sure I'm having a gal though. I'm actually really miffed I'm having a girl, coz I won't get to use it!

Wow three!
I know none.

GladioliBuckets · 18/03/2010 14:16

How about Jaco, like deceased-therefore-legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius?

mathanxiety · 18/03/2010 17:21

It comes from Diego, given a phonetic spelling hundreds of years ago in Cornwall.

MarianneD · 27/03/2010 17:16

Really like this name but lots of baby Jago's around at the moment.

Jago is a Cornish name, usually a surname but can be used as a first name. Pronounced 'Jay-go'. It comes from the name Jacob or James.
