India or Savannah - Pretentious or pretty?

babyincubator · 16/03/2010 16:38

I can't believe how tricky this name choosing malarkey is! What does everyone think about India or Savannah for a girl's name.
I was thinking about using Rose as a middle name so -
Savannah Rose

Or India Rose

?

Foxtrot - I dont get the Fionn reference?

Rindercella that was 'you' as in 'your placement of the word pretty with the blond haired blue eyed part of the statement you are reinforcing this as being the more positive.....' I have been corrected in the past by people in respect of terms I have used flippantly, that have been offensive to certain groups I have not used those terms since. I dont know your background, nor am I assuming what it is. Do you know mine other than 'exotic'?

oldenglishspangles · 16/03/2010 23:32

taht should be 'statement is reinforcing..' not 'you are'

SusieCarmichael · 16/03/2010 23:40

spangles i think you are taking it a bit too far really, there are certain names that don't suit certain skin tones, thats not racsism. i.e i cringe when i hear a white child being called ebony. though funny enough my cousin (who is black) is called bianca! (meaning white!)

sorry op i meant to say i love india rose its a lovely name, not to hot on savanna though personally. i know people with both these names however and none of them are pretentious

SusieCarmichael · 16/03/2010 23:42

agree with second coming

Greensleeves · 16/03/2010 23:43

spangles you are talking a bag o' shite

no wonder the real victims of racial abuse find it difficult to be heard, with idiots like you debasing the issue

---------

I think India is pretty but possibly a bit overused

Savannah is pretty but I prefer Susannah

Rindercella · 16/03/2010 23:50

Spangles, I actually did think quite carefully before using the term exotic in this thread. But I believe what I said to be true. However, I was trying to be diplomatic ( look where that got me) and did not want to say that actually a mousey plain child would not suit the name India (I realise I am likely to get flamed for this too). I think India is a beautiful name, which is why we chose it for our DD.

Living in rural England as we do, our mixed race DD is exotic. I personnally do not regard that as a bad thing and not in the least bit offensive. She is beautiful, and has the most beautiful brown eyes imaginable. I actually deleted 'pretty' from my description of her as I thought it sounded big headed, not because I wanted to emphasise that white girls can be pretty, while non-white girls can't. That would just be ridiculous (and obviously very far from what I believe).

Sorry I called you a numpty - it is clear that you are not.

Right, I'm getting some quite strong contractions. Guess I'd better get off my backside and see if they're going to amount to anything

thumbwitch · 16/03/2010 23:56

I know 2 Indias at playgroup, one of which is an India Rose, here in Australia. Not pretentious here but both DH and I have noticed that names here have different contexts - some names that we might have thought of as pretentious or a bit common in the UK are the opposite here.

The India Rose I know is called Indie-Rose most of the time, btw.

BitOfFun · 17/03/2010 00:00

RINDERCELLA- are you saying what I think you're saying?

Oooh, good luck!

SusieCarmichael · 17/03/2010 00:06

good luck rindercella!

thumbwitch · 17/03/2010 00:11

ooo, Rindercella - hope it goes well if it's started!

oldenglishspangles · 17/03/2010 00:30

Greensleeves many 'exotic' people, like myself find the whole 'exotics name' thing racially offensive. I was pointing that out. Racism like many of the other 'isms can be subtle as well as overt. Although you clearly have alot to spare I suggest you keep your shite.

Rindercella, there is nothing wrong with being proud of your children for being bright, beautiful etc. Good luck with your labour, I hope all goes well.

snowshoes · 17/03/2010 01:20

FWIW, my Anglo-looking children are very much the ethnic minority in their school and I've been told by various people that they look exotic and that their names are exotic. (I would say they have Pretentious European Names myself :D )

I love the name Savannah but it would get shortened here and I don't like any of the nicknames.

I am less fussed on India, although I prefer it to Indianna, which seems to crop up a bit in Oz.

I just dislike any children named after places - sorry! It's like a game of geography snap.

diddl · 17/03/2010 08:41

I don´t like Savannah, but I love India.

I don´t think it´s pretentious & certainly not common-think India Hicks.

Not overly keen on Rose as a middle name.

Cecily, Elizabeth?

gibbberish · 17/03/2010 08:47

Love both of them. I don't think they are pretentious but then again my children's names have been described as 'pretentious', not to my face but when they have come up on here.

Doesn't bother me one jot. Still love them! So use them if you like them and pants to everyone else. It's what you think that counts. Years down the line you might regret not using the names you loved because of what other people thought.

AND names grow on children. Everyone tells me how much mine suit their names. And none of my girls are pretentious as it happens.

Alouiseg · 17/03/2010 08:50

They are both lovely names imo.

Rindercella · 17/03/2010 09:11

I have nothing else to say on this thread other than India is a beautiful name suited to beautiful children

FoxtrotOscarJuliet · 17/03/2010 09:30

On this thread it's definitely been code for 'wouldn't suit a pasty faced moussey plain white child'.

Spangles, no idea what your racial origins are but you should probably concentrate on racism where there is prejudice against non-white people and let us deal with naming our pasty faced moussey children! I know I said a similar thing about Ophelia. It wouldn't suit an ordinary plain mouse haired child. It would draw attention to her ordinariness.

Good luck Rindercella. You chosen a name yet?

FoxtrotOscarJuliet · 17/03/2010 09:32

ps Fionn and finn mean 'fair' and I like the name but no way were any children of mine going to be fair. So I wouldn't use the name. As thesecondcoming says, it's a question of carrying off a name. I would hesitate to you grace, joy and willow as well ! (although I like them.)

Rindercella · 17/03/2010 10:16

Thanks Foxtrot! Yep, decided on Jasmine - we think India and Jasmine go rather nicely together

blogpage · 17/03/2010 10:24

Pretentious
