What do you think of Ailsa and Alexis for twin girls?

I think Ailsa is OK, like Alexis but I don't know if they "go" together but then again I am not a big fan of having siblings with the same initial. Sorry.

elliott · 13/03/2010 10:51

Actually I quite like them both, but I think if I were a twin I would prefer a more individual name rather than a 'matching' one. I never get this idea of choosing sibling names that 'go together'.

jellybeans · 13/03/2010 10:54

I think they are abit too simelar. I have twins and they have totally different names, even then people get mixed up. Both girls could get 'Ali'.

BravoJuliet · 13/03/2010 10:54

too similar.

Eloise And Alexis
Eliza and Alexis
or Elsie and Alexis
or Alicia and Lexie
]
You can't have two names both starting with Al.

BarbaMamma · 13/03/2010 10:56

Do you mean Alisa? It's pretty but I'm not a massive fan of Alexis (think Joan Collins uber-bitch in 1980s Dynasty series). TBH I'd also avoid giving them names with the same initial. It's not going to be great when letters arrive for Ms A. Smith. They also sound quite similar and all twin book/experts seem to recommend not giving twins names that 'match' in any way. So I'd probably stick with one of them and go for another initial with the other, i.e. Alexis and Elisa?

allbie · 13/03/2010 11:40

No, she means Ailsa. It's a scottish name and very pretty.

Collision · 13/03/2010 11:41

I prefer Ailsa and Lexi but they are similar.

starshaker · 13/03/2010 11:48

I personally think you should name them what YOU want to name them (says me who has asked for name advice already). I have now chosen my names and i know some people wont like them but i love them. BTW my combos are
Harrison and leo
Harrison and emily
Emily and Madison

Mine dont match but that not because i deliberatly chose non matching, just chose names i liked.

One thing you might want to consider is that calling twins by names starting with the same letter is a recipe for disaster for data providers and their (automated) computer systems!

The two individuals will likely have the same date of birth, (have) live(d) at the same address and their names would be similar enough for 'dumb' computer systems to assume they are, in fact, the same person.

It'll get annoying pretty fast when the second child's appointment is cancelled as an accidental duplicate of the first. Or when one account/service is closed and everything merged into the other in a data cleansing exercise, requiring yet another call or visit to the provider.

Sure, they can all be resolved... But is the aggravation worth it..?

auricace · 13/03/2010 15:34

The other names that I had thought of (which I know are completely different) are Martha and Skye as they are both quite unusual but sound good together without being too similar.

I like Martha and Skye, and Ailsa actually. In DH's country they call twins variations of the same name - so my SILs are Hasna and Hassania. I think it's a bit weird. It's easy enough to mix their names up anyway as twins so better to have something a bit different to each other.

CurlyCasperReturns · 13/03/2010 15:46

all lovely - Ailsa and Skye are both Scottish islands. Personally I wouldn't want such a clear, matching "theme". But they are beautiful nonethless. (Ailsa has been vetoed by my husband for our little girl, due July)

tiredfeet · 13/03/2010 18:32

I like Ailsa, and really like Skye and Martha, not so sure about Alexis, its not as pretty as the others.

also not sure about twins having names beginning with same letter

janeiteisFedUp · 13/03/2010 18:36

No.

I prefer Martha and Skye but Martha is a much, much nicer name than Skye imho.

SE13Mummy · 13/03/2010 19:22

Personally I don't like Ailsa and Alexis as a combination as they feel like very different names. For the same reason I would steer clear of Skye and Martha.

Ailsa combined with Iona might be a bit themey but I think it's preferable to something sounding too samey. Isla and Skye are other names that would fit with the theme but obviously not to be used together or you'd have the 'Isle of Skye'!
