Why chose an alternative spelling for a recognised name?

Did you? Why?

How do you feel when others then spell the name ?correctly? in the recognised, established way?

Just curious!

Personally I hate it when people do that. Just smacks of trying too hard.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2010 23:33

i spelled my DD1's name the way i did because she is a dual national and in my native country if i spelled it the recognised why people would call her a body part.

venusonarockbun · 12/03/2010 23:52

I detest it when people deliberately miss-spell names in a pathetic meaningless attempt to be 'different'. Its not cool, its pointless and just causes a lifetime of problems.

usualsuspect · 12/03/2010 23:57

It doesn't bother me at all how people spell their childrens names .why would it ?

MrsThePoint · 13/03/2010 00:00

I don?t understand it either. Both my DCs have standard names with standard spellings, yet they both seem to get ?imaginatively? spelt all the time. I just wanted to know if the same happened the other way around.

usualsuspect what I meant was, no matter how you chose to spell your child?s name, how do you feel when other people spell your child?s name differently/wrong to how you chose to. I guess my OP doesn?t make sense if that?s not clear!

Never mind, just late night pondering!

I had a friend who was Krystyna and she used to be furious when people spelled it "Christina". You have to expect that, I think.

I picked "Sam" for that reason- no odd way to spell it or pronounce it.

MrsvWoolf, I think a correct alternative spelling is ok, i.e. Rebekah instead of Rebecca as that's the traditional spelling, Katharine instead of the many other variants etc. I don't see how wanting to use a correct spelling is pretentious.

I think Krystyna is the Polish spelling, I knew one at University who was from Warsaw. My Mum is Welsh and if I have a DD I will probably give her Alys as a middle name as it recognises her Welsh heritage and will be easy for people to pronounce in England.

I think some people maybe don't think before they use an "alternative" spelling, that it will cause the child a lifetime of correcting people, or the child will end up changing their name to the normal spelling (which a friend of mine did)... Then there is of course names which have several variants which all are in "normal use", then the child might have to correct people anyway but there is at least a chance that some people will spell it correctly.

If you have a reason though like ExpatinScotland it's ok of course!

MintyMoo · 13/03/2010 16:57

MrsvWoolf - ah I see what you mean, if it was so obscure that people wouldn't associate it with the modern spelling? That's something I wouldn't do - I know how irritating it is having to constantly correct spellings of names from my own experience but at least my name is an actual name and there's only one spelling so I know mine is legitimate. If I was Jyssyca (Jessica) for example it would be more irritating as people would understandably assume my name was spelled Jessica.

But if people just took the time to learn how to spell people's names the way they spell them it would be easier for everyone (my name has 5 letters and so many people still misspell it, it's not hard to remember 5 letters). People constantly mispronounce it too, even after knowing me seven years. It's two syllables, again not difficult to learn!

nannynobnobs · 13/03/2010 17:04

Augh. My friend was at college with a "Geccika" -pronounced Jessica- and her PARENTS had spelt it that way, it wasn't some teenage fad!

ToccataAndFudge · 13/03/2010 17:09

how do you define an "alternative" spelling though?

Given the number of names which have recognised variations of it, and names which are spelled differently in other countries.

annamama · 13/03/2010 17:24

I think "Geccika" is a great example of an alternative spelling... ... unless of course she was from a country where that's a normal spelling?

shonaspurtle · 13/03/2010 17:29

My name is the gaelic spelling. Everyone always assumes the anglicised version.

Ds's name is the anglicised version (in no small part owing to my frustrations growing up). Everyone always checks that it's not the gaelic spelling.

Can't win but 37 years has taught me not to care much

foreverastudent · 13/03/2010 19:20

After reading the full list of given names for the past couple of years I think that a lot of people are just poor spellers that don't know what the 'correct' spelling is and make unintentional mistakes ie

maryz I think you were referring to my post the other night...

I liked Martin but DH likes Martyn, however we've now decided on a compltely different name so it's no longer relevant.

shonaspurtle · 13/03/2010 19:34

Martyn is the Welsh spelling of Martin I think (that's what my friend's Welsh DH told me anyway).

MinnieMalone · 13/03/2010 19:35

Some of those spellings are just the way other cultures spell the name e.g. Krystyna, Aleksandra, Nikola, Brigit

Personally, I can't stand anglicised versions of names, but that is my own bugbear, I guess.

Deliberately messing around with the spellings of names baffles me. Why?

lovechoc · 13/03/2010 19:48

I know someone who has named their DC 'Arthor'. I still can't get my head around that one...Spell it Arthur or just choose a different name IMHO.
