What do you think of Hilda?

What do you think of Hilda? The longer forms I've been looking at (Brunhilde) I now think are too much with no German connections.

OP posts:

I also think "She Who Must Be Obeyed" when I hear Hilda. And that is not good.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/03/2010 20:11

Noddyholder do you do bellydance? A have a friend Hilde (pronounced Hilda) who is a young gorgeous bellydance teacher/performer. She's not english but here people always do a double take at her name. It's toooo old lady, sorry.

bunnymother · 10/03/2010 20:13

BTW if you like German names, how about Annalise (it has various spellings). Think its v pretty, plus you can shorten it to the Anna part or the Lise part.

Buda · 10/03/2010 20:15

Ogden

allydennis · 10/03/2010 20:16

Dear God no, never... Do you want your child to hate you??

LyraSilvertongue · 10/03/2010 20:42

The OP didn't actually say she wanted a German name.

I read that as Brunhilde would be a bit silly for a child who has no German connections.

Ogden. Sorry.

Merle · 11/03/2010 07:10

I would use it if I had a daughter. Probably would use 'Hilde'.I always liked it since I stayed at Hild & Bede college, in Durham. I thought this was spelt Hilde, but having just looked it up, I realise it isn't. I just prefer it with an 'e' on the end. I'm not the least bit religious but St Hilda was terrific; a great role model for any little girl (or big woman).

bellissima · 11/03/2010 10:18

Hmm. Quite like some old lady names, but Hilda, Dora, Agatha all sound a bit harsh to me.

SmileysPeepul · 11/03/2010 17:01

No not Hilda.

Hilary maybe-I like the Enid Blyton girls boarding school feel of it.

Agnes is lovely too. Simple and elegant.

Ineedsomesleep · 11/03/2010 17:13

Am with ShowofHands on the Coronation Street vibe.

Apparently Hilda is going to do a comeback for one episode so maybe the name will grow in popularity. Although I pity the poor girls who get lumbered with it.

HerHonesty · 11/03/2010 17:24

I think its pretty awful but who am i to talk, i have a dd whose middle name is winifred and wanted to call 2nd dd prudence.

Lotkinsgonecurly · 11/03/2010 17:26

DD's middle name is Phyllis, love the name. But I also like Agnes, Agatha, Martha etc.

Do like Hilda though. On the other hand nickname Hilly reminds me of someone horsey, outside all the time, who enjoys bottles of red wine in the stables, rather than on sofa like the rest of us.

Shitemum · 11/03/2010 17:31

Gilda sounds similar and is far nicer.
Also has cool film noir associations, not a wrinkled brown-tighted leg in sight!
