Would you pronounce Evelyn for a girl with a short e - as in egg, or a long e as in evening?

I would say Eve-lyn, although could be either.

FanjolinaJolie · 08/03/2010 21:48

The only Evelyn I know at the moment is an EV-lyn. I think I have come across Eve-lynns before, though. Personal taste. 'course, i also knew an Eibhlin who was pronounced as both Ev-lyn and Eileen by various folk. She answered to both.

hellymelly · 08/03/2010 21:56

I say Ev-E-Lyn!

hildegarde · 08/03/2010 22:06

at Reality. The examiner at my phonetics exam kept calling it that and I wanted to biff her.

Vivia · 09/03/2010 09:49

No no no, guys! Ev-eh-lyn is female pronunciation. Eve-lyn is male pronunciation (e.g. Evelyn Waugh). Careful!

Northumberlandlass · 09/03/2010 12:42

hmmm - my DH said that his ex fiances mother was called Evelyn and he called her Evil-in (yes I know very childish).

annamama · 09/03/2010 16:42

Egg!

birdofthenorth · 09/03/2010 16:44

Ev-eh-lyn. The other way sounds too much like evil!

totallydifferenttypeofperson · 09/03/2010 22:01

no, no, no! It definitely has only 2 syllables!

bickie · 10/03/2010 12:21

Thankyou Reality - did mean to type pronunciation. Got to love MN - the only forum where not only can people spell - they correct your spelling too! You've all been very helpful! Thanks - it's on the list - with short vowel e.

Ev-lyn if you're Scottish and Eve-lyn if you're not was always the way I knew it.
I remember Evelyn Glennie (deaf percussionist) correcting Michael Aspel on 'This is Your Life' as he was mispronouncing it as Eve-lyn.
