Ava but spelled Eyva

I am having my first baby (a girl) in June. We want a name that has an ethnic indian origin but is familiar in west as well.
I came across Ava which sounds lovely and has beautiful meaning in 'sanskrit' (our ancient language) but I want to spell it 'Eyva'.
Comments please.

names spelt wrong make the parents look thick

DS2 at school with a Kharl - stupid

Bleatblurt · 08/03/2010 19:08

Looks chavvy.

Ava is gorgeous as it is.

janeiteisFedUp · 08/03/2010 19:09

Can't see why you'd mess with the spelling tbh.

Lol at Kharl. Is he brother to Bhob?

menomena · 08/03/2010 19:25

I also think Eyva looks a bit strange and confusing and makes me want to say Eye-va not Ay-va.

Really like Ava and Eva!

scottishmummy · 08/03/2010 19:25

its ava not fucking hard only 3 letters.Eyva looks contrived and you will constantly be spelling it,correcting it.and people will all wonder why didnt she spell it ava if she wants ava?

oh the ignominy of it all

girlsyearapart · 08/03/2010 19:32

sorry another no here too.

Ava is a lovely name spelt how it is.

I can see what you mean about the need to have it 'work' in two languages though- my sister's DP is from Argentina. They have 3 dcs, the first has a name that works in english not in spanish, the second is the other way around and the third finally works in both.

LillianGish · 08/03/2010 19:35

All the Ava's I know (quite a few) are spelled Eva (French school!). Though in England you'll probably spend your whole time correcting the pronunciation (as happened to an English friend of mine who wanted Eva, but has had give in to it being constantly prounced Ava by the French).

appu · 08/03/2010 19:44

Ok ladies, that was loud and clear . I will probably go for Ava or keep looking for that perfect name, still have a few months to go!

If you're choosing Ava then please spell it as Ava, not try to make it something different.

How about one of these Sanskrit names? I think they work as 'Western' names too...
Uma?
Veda?
Alisha?
Kali?
Opal?
Neela?
Bela?
Lila/Leela?
Tara?
Beryl?
Maya?
Amber?

Eyva looks clunky and cobbled-together.

Ava is a beautiful name.

FanjolinaJolie · 09/03/2010 13:35

Ava is lovely! Please don't muck about with the spelling.

Eyva I'd pronounce eye-va, sounds like an old man's name like that. Also sounds like the name of a model of Toyota car, reminds me of aygo.

JennyPiccolo · 09/03/2010 16:06

Ava/Eyva/Eva all remind me of Hilter's missus, to be honest.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 10/03/2010 18:08

Why would you want to change the spelling? Ava is a beautiful name, an old Persian name as well. Eyva just looks like one of the many made-up spellings that parents seem to favour these days

InterplanetJanet · 11/11/2014 05:15

You people were EXTREMELY unkind to Appu. You should be ashamed of yourselves. May you all experience the same type of criticism with regard to something as sacred to you exactly as you leveled it at her. Eyva is a GORGEOUS name. Absolutely sublime... This lady needed your support. Your encouragement. Your kind and thoughtful response. Obviously she had given this a lot of thought. Instead, you were petty and immature. Like schoolgirls pulling the new girl's hair. I hope she ignored you all. I would be proud to have such a Heavenly name.

Madamecastafiore · 11/11/2014 05:17

It reads Eva though. If you want it to read Ava then call it Ayva at least.

Or bugger it and just call it Ava.

Madamecastafiore · 11/11/2014 05:18

Eeyore was eee yore not ay yore. (IYKWIM).
