Ysabelle instead of Isabelle, do you like it?

Just wondered, as I think it's pretty. If it gets shortened however, would Yssy look nice on paper, or strange?

I had a friend with a weird spelling of her name, but she always spelt it the normal way as she didn't like the way it was on the birth certificate. I know you want to be different and you think it looks pretty but it's probably not a good idea...

There is a girl who went to my school. Haven't seen her for years, and not friends, but she is on the friends list of mutual acquaintances. Her name was susan. She changed the spelling to Suzin which was crazy enough! but now I notice she has changed that to Zin. how the fUCK to you get Zin out of Susan? you have to HALF admire that level of creativity. I hope nobody knows who i am talking about.

MrsMargate · 08/03/2010 12:31

I think it sounds a bit pretentious.

And I think I would assume you were forrin.

I spend my life spelling my surname and it's a right PITA. I can't imagine what an unholy ache in the hole it would be to have to do it with your first name.

Bicnod · 08/03/2010 12:38

Sorry but I laughed when I saw this thread

Just call her Isabelle or Isobel, both are prettier than Ysabelle IMHO.

Headbanger · 08/03/2010 12:48

By the way. Zadie Smith was actually called Sadie.

FACT.

FanjolinaJolie · 08/03/2010 12:54

Does look like a typo I think too.

Wouldn't like LO to be teased at school as WISE-abel or similar.

I'm now wondering what your name is, Frakkin. Yve? Yvette? Yvana?

I love Yseult, does she get 'Izzy'? It's Izzy that would put me off calling a daughter Isolde, but if Yseult would remain unmurdered I could go for that. Not that I have a daughter.

seeker · 08/03/2010 13:09

Ygraine and Yseult are fine - (if a bit poncy!)

Ysabel is like Yris or Yvy or Yrene!

MavisG · 08/03/2010 13:10

Oops. Just seen 'middle' name. Shame. Visions of legions of Y-named girls evaporate. Lovely names though.

thumbwitch · 08/03/2010 13:12

There was a girl at my junior school whose name was spelled Mysheele. Pronounced Michelle. I wonder how she's getting on with that...

expatinscotland · 08/03/2010 13:16

You think it's pretty. I think it's stoopid.

frakkinaround · 08/03/2010 13:17

I don't have a funky Y name at all I almost wish I did because then at least I'd have a reason for people not to be able to spell/say it.

The cousins' mother is Yvette actually! My sister just has a Y name so her names spell the month she was born, which is quite nice. Not that it really matters cos no-one sees the full name or uses it.

seeker · 08/03/2010 13:28

I particularly like Phrancesca and Phlorence. Phrancis is nice for a boy and Phergus if you're Scottish.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 08/03/2010 13:41

hysterical. Am loving Yris and Yvy and Phrancis and Phergus etc

5DollarShake · 08/03/2010 15:37

I'm loving Phlorence - brilliant!

If someone said Isabel with a 'Y', like many others, I would have no idea where to put the 'Y'.

It just looks silly.
