some names I have been thinking about!

Hi all
We are ttc no 5 and I am due to test on Monday (feeling queezy so fingers crossed!).
To stop myself from testing early I have been thinking about some more names (although boys are a bit more set).
Would love some opinions - trying to avoid anything too trendy!

Girls

Sybil
Daphne
Mildred (Dilly as nn)
Miriam
Jean
Joan

I am feeling a little bored of our current front runner - Juniper.
Boys will probably be one of Shem, Lev or Mordecai, dh also mentioned Lazarus.

So, opinions on Lazarus - will it be forever associated with lepers? Also not sure Lazarus 'fits' with other dc's.
Thanks!

Brief aside... Lazarus never had leprosy. In the Bible, his illness is never specified. I really like it... definately original!

shoobidoo · 04/03/2010 11:51

Your fifth child? Quentin for a boy!

All the girls names are lovely, particularly Sybil and Mildred.

tummytickler · 04/03/2010 12:00

shoobidoo - dh will not entertain Quentin - does not fit! Boys name must be Hebrew, girls does not matter! I do like Quentin though!
organic - the few times I have mentioned Lazarus in rl lepers have been mentioned in response so I think the link is a fairly strong one (even if innacurate!)
Thanks for the responses!

Mordecai was a suggestion for my DS, but how do you pronounce it? I would say Mor-de-ky -rather than Mor-de-kay-eye. I love Daphne for a girl. Best of luck for test day!

jellybeans · 04/03/2010 13:42

Jean and Lev are OK, not keen on others.

bellissima · 04/03/2010 14:43

Okay its my age, but I fear that Sybil will always have the Fawlty Towers connection. Like Daphne. Another vote for Lev.

Sunshinemummy · 04/03/2010 15:29

Daphne and Lev for me.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2010 15:43

Sybil -- Beautiful and unusual
Daphne -- Beautiful
Mildred -- mixture of mildew and dread, so NO
Miriam -- Beautiful
Jean -- Too 'matter of fact'
Joan -- Same as Jean, too plain

Love Sybil, Daphne and Miriam for girls.
Of the boys' names, I love Lev.

WRT Lazarus -- it's from Hebrew, means 'God is my help'; Lazarus was the beggar covered with sores from the NT parable. Lazar is an old word for leper, so there might be some link between Lazarus and leprosy.

SE13Mummy · 04/03/2010 16:05

We have a Miriam (one of the meanings is 'wished for child' which was particularly appropriate).

Other names that might fit: Tabitha, Talitha, Lydia.

For boys how about Ezra, Gabriel, Jude?

LynetteScavo · 04/03/2010 16:07

Miriam is lovely.

AllieW · 04/03/2010 16:36

Miriam and Daphne from the girls

Shem, Lev or Mordecai from the boys. My friend's son is Mordecai and he is known as Kai.

tummytickler · 05/03/2010 22:22

Thank you everyone! We would use Morrie as a nn for Mordecai, as we know a few Kai's. Dh has now said he thinks Mordecai is a bit long (other dc's have short names) i think this is being a bit rigid though!
I don't think Lazarus is an option for me, no matter how much dh likes it, I just can't make myself love it!
Any more opinions very welcome!
Boys are tough - our shortlist is a bot too short - still Shem and Lev (with possible Mordecai) and I like Omri, but dh not so! This is going to be hard.

I am loving Sybil though - and rather like the Fawlty Towers connection!

My sister is called Dilly, short for Cordelia if you like that but not Mildred...

Like Daphne lots too.

janeiteisFedUp · 06/03/2010 00:14

How come the boys' name has to be Hebrew but not the girls' name? Or am I being too nosy?

The thing is, I think there are lots of Hebrew girls' names that are nicer than the names you've listed:
Rachel
Ruth
Naomi
Rebecca
Abigail

Of the ones you've listed, I prefer Mildred/Dilly, though it's not a name I love.

Lazarus is really not good imho, sorry.

janeiteisFedUp · 06/03/2010 00:18

Jacob?
Noah?
David?
Isaac?
Thaddeus?
Samuel?
Tobias?
Barnabas?

I like all of those!

janeiteisFedUp · 06/03/2010 00:19

Simeon is nice too.

Clary · 06/03/2010 00:21

I love Sybil.

I know a simply super one (she's 7) and nobody to my knowledge has ever mentioned Fawlty Towers.

Daphne is also due a comeback, surely.

Can't help on yr boys' names, sorry not my area that.

tummytickler · 06/03/2010 05:54

jane - if I had my way the girls name would be Hebrew too, but dh likes old names (although it is probable that she would end up with a Hebrew name as he likes Miriam and Shifrah).
I am not too fussed, I am certainly not prepared to do battle over it at the moment!
I like Naomi and Rebecca, but dh does not.

tummy I really like Lev - tbh I hate your girl's names list. If I were you, I'd be quiet with your husband for the moment and quietly draw up a list of beautiful Hebrew girl's names. I am the opposite right now... OH likes girl's Hebrew names but is reluctant to entertain any boy's ones except the usual suspects.

That aside, if you want the child to be called Dilly, do it - otherwise she'll be called Mildew. Why give the child a name you don't like and then informally call it something else?

FullTimeChoreDodger · 06/03/2010 11:30

Miriam and Sybil are lovely.

mildred i half like. reminds me of mildew.

Jeannie is lovely btw but I agree with other posters that Jean is a bit dull and short.

Lazarus would make me snigger i'm afraid. Sorry.
