African/Chinese/Scottish

Would like any suggestions for the below, please!

first name - African
Middle names - Chinese and Scottish

e.g. Kwame Tevin Wenyan
Chenai Tara Qiang

I don't mind how unusual the middle names sound to British ears, they are to honour DCs heritage.

when you say african, can you be more specific? kenyan? south african? egyptian? moroccan?

bellissima · 01/03/2010 13:30

heQet totally right - there is more DNA variation between Africans than in all of us boring farts in the rest of the world put together. So to lump 'African' in the same boat as 'Scottish' is (with no disrespect to any proud Scot) a bit odd.

ChynaDoll2006 · 01/03/2010 13:31

heQet, don't mind as to where in Africa. Prefer indigenous languages to Arabic but would not rule out an Arabic name. Particularly interested in Ancient Egyptian names, or names from Zimbabwe and Zambia, Ghana, and Ethiopia.

If it's for a girl i'd love Zvipozvashe but i'm guessing you want boys names

heQet · 01/03/2010 16:42

If they are to honour your son's heritage then don't you think it would be better to have a name from the country, not just the continent?

Not being difficult but it's kind of like someone saying they want to honour their sons English heritage by giving him a name from, say, Poland.

When you say "ancient Egyptian" north African names, I assume that you mean Amazigh names?

ie the traditional, pre-Arabic names of north Africa

On this page, about half way down in the middle, are links to some Amazigh girls and boys names:

That list is not complete, by the way - I notice that Taos, one of my favourite girls names is not on it!

Here's another list of Amazigh names, interesting as the poster has put the meaning of each one:

heQet, my DP is from the Caribbean. He doesn't know where he comes from in Africa although it is obviously most likely to be West Africa. However, he is a pan-africanist and so claims to be linked with all black African cultures.

and nighbynight, I don't mean Berbers, I mean the black-skinned people of ancient Egypt.

Isis is a lovely - if obvious - Egyptian name.

Have you considered Swahili names? Many of them are very beautiful. I loved Imani (means grace) for DD but we didn't use it in the end.

Might be worth doing some research into the African name thing. Many African cultures name their children according to day of the week born (e.g. Kwame means 'born on saturday) or qualities they want him/her to have etc. Name meaning is generally really important.
