I like it a lot.

Completely unrelated but my Ds loves the 5 little ducks song and has me singing it over and over again. I had only just got it to stop going round my head when I clicked on this thread and saw your name.

4 little ducks went swimming one day.....

My dd is called alana so im biased but i love the name and as of yet havent met anybody else with the same name as her

Thanks Ladies...yes, 4 little ducks inspired by the song !! but am 39+ wks with DD4, and after months of thinking we'd go for one name, Alana was suggested tonight, and it goes really well with other DDs plus we're in Scotland and it can have Gaelic origins.

Starshaker - do people have trouble spelling it, or pronouncing it ? I grew up with one who spelt it Alannah.

There is a Alannah in dd's class. I prefer it spelt that way.

foreverastudent · 27/02/2010 22:17

I thought the most common spelling was Alanna.

I like it but it's a pain having to spell your name to people.

What about Alaina or Alaia or Alanya or Ailanna as alternatives?

katiepotatie · 27/02/2010 22:29

my mil is Allana. It's a lovely name

SE13Mummy · 27/02/2010 23:46

I know an Alana and an Alannah and their parents pronounce the names differently. Alana is pronounced A-lar-nuh whereas Alannah rhymes with Hannah.

starshaker · 28/02/2010 01:15

Most people here (scotland aswell) asume its spelt alana. And they pronounce it as its spelt so no issues. I chose that spelling as its the easiest for her to learn to spell cos i had a nightmare with my name lol.

I just love the name and was the same as you. Had a name chosen and then when she was born decided she was alana lol

alannabanana · 28/02/2010 08:56

well i couldn't help but chip in on this one, being the proud owner of the name alanna myself!
i can tell you that as a kid i was a bit resentful of not being called sarah or katie or something 'normal' like everyone else, as i was always called (obviously) alannabanana/pyjama/pirhana etc, but after a few words of encouragement from my mum ('they're just jealous of your unique non-boring name etc') i really loved being called alanna, and do now.
in gaelic it means 'my little one/my fair child' which is very nice for baby i think. how you spell it depends on how you want to pronounce it - i pronounce it a-lar-na, but if you want it said like 'alan-a' then just give it one 'n'. word of warning though, that way people will ask you if its the female version of 'alan' which really annoys me! it is a name in its own right with its own meaning and not the female version of anything!!

bellissima · 28/02/2010 09:56

I don't think it's a female version of Alan anymore than Harriet is a female version of Harry (ie it's a lovely name in it's own right!).

Now Nigella - hmmm.
