What makes a name 'recognized?" Not being arsey - honest - just wondering.

LilyBolero · 27/02/2010 10:26

What about Sol, then nickname as Sunny?

LilyBolero · 27/02/2010 10:27

Or Soren?

Oh god there are lots and lots of names that you'd probably think are not 'real' names! You sound like my nan
I know a 30 odd year old Sonny (real name) and a toddler Sonny (real name) and never ever thought anything odd of it at all.
I also know a Teddy and an Issy - both their full names, which you'd probably dispute as being 'real' as well.
I definitely think Sonny is used enough now as a full name to be 'recognised'

Seeker - if calling a child Sonny is the same as calling him 'fellermylad' then isnt calling him 'John' the same as 'toilet' and thats a dull traditional name

You could most liekly make a joke/find a reason to dislike most names if you wanted to!

notsoteenagemum · 27/02/2010 10:36

Here we go again, once upon a time Kate was considered not a proper name, Kate which today people think 'meh', boring etc to.
As for the Prime Minister thing, Tony Blair got to be Prime Minister and I know his real name is Anthony but it wasn't as if he used Anthony right up until he was voted in and then said "MWAHAHAHA! Fooled you all I'm Tony now!"

seeker · 27/02/2010 10:43

How about Fanny, then?

lowrib · 27/02/2010 10:50

Not Sol if you live up North though! Or anywhere they say "Our so-and-so" as an affectionate term.

My mates called their DS Sol. When the relatives turned up they all called him "Our Sol".

Very unfortunate!

"MWAHAHAHA! Fooled you all I'm Tony now!"

What a fantastic image!

lowrib · 27/02/2010 11:02

You know what, I think I might have been in a bit of a bad mood last night! I'm having a change of heart on Sonny.

It does sound like "lad" or "son" to me, but so what?! It is a nice sounding name, goes well with Gene, and if you love it then ignore the nay-sayers and go for it!

My DS has an unusual name which probably isn't to everyone's taste, but we love it. If I had listed to the MN jury he'd probably be called Charles or Edward instead

And anyway people are much more polite once you've actually chosen the name.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 11:03

I love all your names actually.

we have an Asa, so obviously like that! Love Sonny too, i know a little sonny and he's gorgeous.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 27/02/2010 11:05

i know three sonnys, it's becoming v popular.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 11:09

wtf has Fanny got to do with it?

"oh, i don't like Sonny, so i'll somehow try and compare it to a name which has become common usage for female genitalia, that'll show them that i'm right"

yeah.

notsoteenagemum · 27/02/2010 12:02

If you're offering seeker but I usually prefer Cock

mumoftoomany · 27/02/2010 12:06

Sonny is great and goes well with Gene!

Asa is girls name in Scandinavia. Ending in -a, it sounds feminine imo.

Rudolph/Rudy is not nice imo. It is too close to 'rude' and reminds me of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.

So, I'd vote for Sonny!

seeker · 27/02/2010 20:11

Sorry - went out. What I meant by mentioning Fanny is that I don't think it's a good idea to say that you can use any name you like regardless of associations because someone will always find something negative to say about it. No one would, presumably, think of calling their child Fanny or Roger any more, so associations do matter. And I can't think of any positive associations with Sonny. Patronizing name for a little boy - macho police slang for a criminal. I GENUINELY can't think of a single positive one.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 21:18

but seeker i don't think everyone views it like that any more.

I can't even remember ever hearing anyone to refer to a young boy as sonny, tbh. or if i have it's not been often.
perhaps for older generations, or in certain parts of the country, but not everywhere.

i just think of it as a name. fanny on the other hand is pretty ubiquitous slang for vagina, everyone, everywhere knows it. so it isn't really the same.
You can't help but think Sonny is condescendin, but i can assure you that a vast amount of people just think of it as a name

seeker · 27/02/2010 21:22

When did it become a name? Seriously - not being arsey, I promise! Are there any famous Sonnys?
