Frederick/Fredrick

How would you spell Frederick/Fredrick?

I like Frederick for a boy - it's my dad's middle name.

My family are not known for their amazing ability to spell correctly - I'm Nichola with the 'h' in the middle and have spent a lifetime saying "that's Nichola with a h" whenever I have to give my name - I've even started saying "with a h after the c" as I've had the h put at the beginning, the end .... grrrrrr! I know it is an accepted spelling of Nichola/Nicola - but the more usual one seems to be without the h.

Frederick only looks right to me if it has the e between the Fred and the rick - but this could just be because it's how I'm used to seeing it spelt this way in my family!

What do you think - e or no e?

Also, what about Frederick as a name - I like the fact it can be Freddie for a little boy and can turn into Fred or Rick as he gets older - and obviously when he becomes Prime Minister Frederick is a good solid name!!! lol

I prefer traditional names - my elder son is William.

Welcome your opinions?

Frederick, otherwise he'll be 'Fredrick without the middle "e"', which is clearly what you're trying to avoid.

i don't know any fredericks and it looks right with the e to me. it's a great name.

Frederick, the other ways looks like you can't spell

hildegarde · 26/02/2010 14:34

Frederick is the correct, usual spelling (also there is Frederic, the French one which was used a bit here in times gone by).

i like it a lot. v. popular though, along with just Freddie.

definitely Frederick with the e.

nickelbabe · 26/02/2010 14:37

btw, it's a very good name!

Absolutely love this name, it was my Grandad's name. Its so much nicer than just Freddie, as you say, it will last him a lifetime.

The spelling of Frederick is fine, go for it.

AllieW · 26/02/2010 14:37

Frederick, definitely.

I have a Frederick and a William

that is the common spelling in UK

European can be Fredrik/Fredric etc. but unless you or dh are german or something, i would go with the usual one.

i still love the name, (ds is 4) it's not THAT common, but there might be a couple in his class at school i suppose.

family connection very nice to honour; my grandfather was frederick and i sometimes talk to ds about the (long deceased) 'other fred'.
