Boys name that goes with Arthur?

Had my 20 week scan yesterday and I think I'm having another boy.

DH and I are really really struggling to find any boys names we like.

DS1 is Arthur, which we chose because it's classic but not that popular (yet), most people are aware of it, can spell it etc, and I like the sound it makes - not too harsh.

Can anyone suggest a similar name? I don't really want anything too common-place, so Harry/James/William etc are out.

The only name we can agree on is Ted, but neither of us like the full names Edward/Edgar/Edmund/Theodore.

I have a freind with an Arthur who is a twin, the twin is called Eddie ( not Edward )I think these work really well together and Eddie is unusual.

Arthur is such a lovely name

Good ones with it I think might be:

George
Freddie/Frederick
Stanley
Sidney
Wilfred (maybe a bit out there)
Edwin/Edward
Henry
All classic World War 1 names! (ie popular in 1900 so on a lot of war memorials, sadly)

Thomas and James and William are also of that era, but IME a lot more popular than any of the above. I know a couple of Freddies, a couple of Georges, one Stanley, one or two Eddies and two Henrys, as opposed to about 10 Jameses etc.

(reads thread) oooh yes I like Eric too! You cannot have Arthur and Lancelot tho

My DS1 is Stanley and DS2 is Wilfred. Stanley's best mates are Arthur and Fred. Other names amongst his friends are Frank, Ned, Louis, Henry, Teddy, Ernie and Bertie.

So many along the right lines! Thanks

My favourites so far are:
Herbie
Frank
Walter (Walt)
Laurence (Laurie)
Clarence (Clarie)
Stanley
George
Wilf - my brother had a dream this baby was called Wilfred, which is weird as I had the same dream when pregnant with DS1
Oswald (Ossie)
Hector
Monty
Sidney

I also like Mortimer (Morty) and weirdly I quite like Spike which has come out of nowhere and doesn't fit my original criteria at all

And I'm quite feeling the H names - Horace/Horatio is good, and I also like Humphrey.

Am pleased to hear there are other Wilfs about as DH thinks I'm insane to have chosen the name for DS2 but I've just always really loved it.

Betty Spike is a great name - I wanted that as a back up for Arthur but DH wouldn't have it. We also had Sidney on our list too, I'd forgotten about that.

Clary you're right they are all WW1 names - when I told my folks that as well as having DS1 called Arthur, DS2 was going to be Wilf, she laughed and said "I can picture them both in uniform, with pencil moustaches and pipes" and she's exactly right! So can I!

Clary · 01/03/2010 09:43

lol snowtiger, lovbing them both in their uniform there.

Arthur and Wilf, that's fab. And twosofar's Arthur with best mates Stanley and Fred!

lottiejenkins · 01/03/2010 09:44

When i had my Wilf i told my husband i wanted a "death column name" He was horrified till i explained that i wanted an old persons name. My Mum wasnt keen on the name "I'll have to get used to that name!" My response was " Yes you will wont you Mum!" The other reason he was called Wilfred was after Wilfred Owen the poet. He was one of the bravest men to fight in WW1, he chose to go back to the front after he had been invalided out (he went to replace Siegfried Sassoon) He died the week before Armistice Day and his parents got the telegram on the day the bells were ringing for peace!

Snowtiger · 01/03/2010 13:07

Wilfred Owen is one of the inspirations for my Wilf, too lottie. A beautiful soul. Lovely to know others share the sentiment!
