Mary for a girl -too old hat?

Do you think Mary is too old fashioned for a baby girl today?

It's my mum's name and we're considering using it if bump turns out to be a girl, possibly with Jude as the middle name after MIL Judith. What do you think of Mary Jude?

I like the sound of Mary for a baby/ toddler but wonder if a little girl, a teenager or a young woman of this generation would be happy with it?

I love, love Mary Jude. Much better than Mary Judith.

I think Polly may be a nick name for Mary (correct me if i'm wrong).

I love the name Mary!

I think Mary is quite a stylish name, and I prefer Judith as a mn -- the Sister Mary Jude comment rang a bell here. I always thought Molly was a pet name for Mary, though. However, Molly has become established enough as a name in its own right.

Really like Mary, I know two a forty year old and a five year old.

I have a Mabel, old names are cool!!!

I know two little girls called Mary, both under 2 and it really suits both of them, it's a very sweet name.

Skegness · 25/02/2010 19:45

(Marianne v v good too.)

Mary is my 9 week old DD middle name, after my mum!
It's lovely and it doesnt matter about having a Molly and a Mary IMO, now if you were thinking Molly and Milly then that might be a bit silly!
Ha! Saying that Ive just realised I have 2 great Aunts, Molly and Millie, dont think they are sisters though...

My DD2's middle name is Mary, she was named after my Aunty who died suddenly when I was 12 weeks pg with DD2. DD2 is Cerys Mary and we often use her full name, i.e. both names (not surname aswell!!).

When she was a baby I used to sing "Cerys Mary my little fairy how I love you so, with pretty eyes and a lovely smile my love for you will grow and grow.....". My DD1 who was 2 at the time cottoned on and used to sing it too.

Cerys Mary is now almost 2 and anything but a fairy......feisty no. 2 child!!! (she's still lovely though!!)

I say go for it!!

Mary is a wonderful name. Strong, established, universal, cultured, enduring and will never be "popular". An all round beautiful name. I say go for it too.

5DollarShake · 26/02/2010 20:30

Ooh Bird, you're doing the same as we are (assuming this baby is a girl) - naming a DD after her 2 grandmothers - and Mary will be our middle name, coincidentally!

I am also named after my 2 grandmothers, so passing on the tradition.

LibbyLobster just reminded me of that Alan Partridge Christmas Special where the first guests come in and announce how now it will be to celebrate the Lord's birthday...

And indeed in Belgium every woman of a certain generation (DH's mother and both grandmothers!) is named Maria AFTER THE HOLY VIRGIN.

These days you get endless variations - Mia, Mieke etc. I think Mary is the lovely English variation and does indeed sound fresher than Maria (which to me is Belgian old ladies) and ahem less common than Marie (okay, I'm thinking of 80s 'Kelly-Marie's).

bellissima · 27/02/2010 10:28

sorry, how nice it will be to celebrate the Lord...

Mary is lovely. Timeless, classic and much underused nowadays. It is a simple yet elegant name like, Jane, kate and Ann.

I would expect a revival in these names soon, as an antidite to the frilly girliness of recent years, so you could be leading the way.

I think Mary Judith sounds good, and lovely to be named aftre her grnadmothers.

LaRagazzaInglese · 27/02/2010 23:49

Love Mary i think it's so pretty, (Jude always reminds of Judas sorry if ive ruined for you, don't listen to me) prefer Judy.
