Do you know many May/Maes?

OP posts:

About 6 under 4yrs old then another 10 ish with it has a middle name.

Bucharest · 24/02/2010 13:03

As a first name, not popular at all.

As a middle name, ubiquitous and as common as that other default middle name Rose.

Both are lovely and simple as stand-alones, but yawningly boring as middle names.

Don't spell it Mae though- that's try-too-hard.

Feierabend · 24/02/2010 13:06

I think it's too short for a first name, if that makes sense?

sugartits · 24/02/2010 13:08

I know loads of Mae's, some first names and some second names - very popular. We considered it for DD2 as it's a family name, but am glad we didn't now.

twosofar · 24/02/2010 13:18

About a thousand with is as a middle name but I have only ever met one girl with May as a first name - well I say girl she was in her twenties at the time and I thought it sounded incredibly pretty. Agree re the spelling , please not Mae

twosofar · 24/02/2010 13:19

Sorry I'm lying, I do know a 2 year old Mabel who gets called May. I like it as a first name

bellissima · 24/02/2010 13:31

I've never met a first name May either. It's a family name and I think it's lovely. But please May, not Mae.

cyteen · 24/02/2010 13:37

I love May as a first name, don't know why people don't use it more. Unfortunately I'll never be able to use it for any future DD as with my surname it sounds like a description. So please use it!

MrsJohnDeere · 24/02/2010 13:40

Don't know any children with Mae/May as first name.
Hugely popular as a middle name (along with Grace and Rose).

welshandproud · 24/02/2010 13:41

My grandmother was May. I love the name especially when spelt Mae. I don't know any children with that name at the moment.

TweedyneeCole · 24/02/2010 14:42

I don't know any May/Mae first name-ers. Only middle names. very unimaginative as a middle name - Ellie-Mae, Molly-May etc - surely the Louiseof the early 21st century?

But May as a first name is really rather sweet.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/02/2010 14:45

Yes, one aged 10 in Ds class.

More as middle names

But deffo May, not Mae

I think it's lovely. prefer Mae as May too much like month. v pretty

pixiestix · 24/02/2010 16:58

Mae is a family name and I absolutely love it. So that it has exploded in popularity like it has.

boodleboot · 24/02/2010 18:23

Mae is much nicer than May....i am biased as have an Ellie Mae {and couldn't give a stuff how 'common' or'unimaginative' people think that is.....}she loves it and we have never come across anotherin any of her circle of friends....

AllieW · 24/02/2010 18:31

I've met one small child with it as a first name. I like both spellings. I also like Mai (pn My) which is slightly more unusual.

Blanchet · 24/02/2010 19:22

Never met one, surprised that so many have. Just looked at the stats out of nosiness nad May is #392 and Mae is #319, there's also Mai trailing behind at #839... So it's not like it's mega-popular. The Daisy-Mae, Ellie-May type names are a lot more popular than just May/Mae on its own.

I think May is quite distinctive as a first name, pretty but nice and simple too, not fussy.

bruffin · 24/02/2010 19:39

I hate the spelling Mae too made up. My DD has May as a middle name after my mum and my grandmother who both had it as a middle name.

I think its is lovely as a first name and although I know a few Mai's (the welsh spelling) it's not that popular.
FWIW I think it's lovely as a middle name, can't quite understand why people get so bothered about someone elses childs middle names, hardly anyone uses their full name anyway.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 24/02/2010 20:45

I dont know any with it as a first name. I know 74 with it as a middle name.

pixiestix · 25/02/2010 11:50

My great grandmother was called Mae. She was born in 1899. I'm sure she would have been interested to know that it was "made up by Mae West" 20 years later!
