Am due DD2 in 9 weeks and we are really struggling for names. I really like Elsa/Elsie but my DH says they are old ladies names! What do other people think? I wondered about going with Elsa short for Elizabeth or Elisabeth but I would want her to be Elsa/Elsie and NOT Liz/Lizzie.

I also like:

Elise
Eloise
Annalie (but DH says sounds like Anally )
Arianne/Ariana (but DH says sounds like areola)

Any thoughts would be welcome!

I love Elsa & Elise.

Like Arianne.

BellasYummyMummy · 17/02/2010 11:29

i love love love elsa but my DH isnt keen, however as a compromise we have settled on eloise which i also love (ill have a boy now wait and see!)

lola0109 · 17/02/2010 11:37

I love Elsie, but for some reason can't see a teenager being called it, same with maisie, another name I love! I think they suit babies/toddlers then old ladies, but once they hit teens or above...

I LOVE Elise, if DP would let me it'd be on my list but he has something against it.

Could you go with Elise/Elisabeth and maybe just have elsie as a pet name? I'm a Laura and my family and ONLY my family call me Lola. My mum did when I was a baby and it's stuck, when people hear my family say it they do a double take, which I like, as it's just our thing!

(although not since I've used it as my MN nickname! )

Elsa is gorgeous, makes me think of Elsa Lanchester.

GothDetective · 17/02/2010 11:46

I love Elsa, think its nicer than Elsie. If I had another DD Elsa would be high on the short list.

houseworkhater · 17/02/2010 12:09

I would go with Elsa, tis a lovely name in it's own right.

Househunter · 17/02/2010 12:12

Thanks for your thoughts so far. I like the spelling of Elisabeth with an S but am wondering if she would have to spend her whole life correcting the spelling... Also, am assuming it doesn't change the pronounciation?

Might be easier to go for Elsa without it being shorter for something but doesn't look like DH will go for that!

My friend has a little girl called Elsa. Not short for anything! I think its lovely.

birdofthenorth · 17/02/2010 14:32

I love Elsa. Go for it!

Elsa123 · 17/02/2010 14:47

Hello. I like Elsa- I think its lost its Lion connection nowadays too. I agree with your husband that Elsie does sound a little old fashioned.

Ziggurat · 17/02/2010 15:27

Elsa is just lovely.

Much prefer to Elsie, which is a little bit old lady.

Elise is nice too, but does have a different feel.

Elisabeth is also lovely as a compromise with your DH - Elsa as a nn.

Tortington · 17/02/2010 15:28

i know an elsa - a young woman - and its a lovely name

Wolfblass · 17/02/2010 15:39

Elsa i adore, Elsie not so kee. Elsa imo, sounds elegant and more 'tpday' i so think that Elsie sounds a little more old lady like.

Eloise i like, but also think it could be shortened to Ellie

Elisabeth i love, as mrsvwold says you are more likely to have Elsa and Bessie as the nn.

Arianna i shortlised for my dd, but didn't suit.

Annalie, i prefer Annalise

Wolfblass · 17/02/2010 15:39

apologies for typing, my 11 month old darling is trying to 'help'

mathanxiety · 17/02/2010 15:59

Elsa is a beautiful northern European/ Scandinavian name, not a bit old ladyish, imo. Same goes for Anneliese. Elsie is definitely old ladyish, but very fashionable. Your DH needs to spend time at your local playground and get more hip.

OtterInaSkoda · 17/02/2010 16:03

I love Elsa. It would be a definate frontrunner should I ever have a dd. It makes me think of "Borrrrrrrrn Free", but that's a good thing.

Househunter · 17/02/2010 21:22

Thanks all. Will show this thread to my DH!

My baby was born a week ago and we named her elsa. i love it.

MaggieMaeve · 20/02/2010 12:02

I love Elsa!

I agree with your husband about Annalee though. That is far too close to Anally! Arianne is OK,but make it Marianne and there's just a bit more too it imo.

Elsa or Marianne would both be lovely.

Househunter · 20/02/2010 13:18

I like Marianne too but according to DH thats is the name of some woman that used to stalk him

I like Elsa but can't get over the Born Free connection (if I recall correctly it was the name of the Lioness). Elsie is sweet. Another similar name which I really love (I think it means happiness/bliss) is Elysia.
