Boys names

I'm expecting number three in May. We already have an Alexander Fletcher (middle name, not surname) and a Cosmo George Thomas, and are torn for boys names (although have a surfeit of as yet unused girls names).

I like unusual but not (in my opinion) outlandish names, but am happy to pair with more standard middle name, just to err on side of caution / keep family members happy.

So far we are thinking of

Beau
Beamish
Lux (means light in Latin)
Humphrey
Orson
Montgomery / Montmorancy
Clement (but obv already have a 'C' name)

Any thoughts? Middle names likely to be something like Edward or William

Like Montgomery next, Monty is a great NN.

MrsJamin · 16/02/2010 11:19

next? most. (sorry preg-head-induced stupidity)

CakeandRoses · 16/02/2010 11:20

Beau - I do like this but they'd have to be great-looking and confident to carry it off!

Beamish - sorry, don't like this. Sounds like a made-up French-Scottish hybrid

Lux (means light in Latin)- I usually love Latin names and x names (my DS1 is Felix) but I;m not sure this one quite works as a name

Humphrey - I'm afraid I don't like this and it sounds quite 'heavy' and it seems uninspired compared to your other names

Orson - I like this a lot and was thinking about it the other day wondering why it hadn't become more popular

Montgomery / Montmorancy - Really like Montgomery but you'd have to expect Monty as a nn (which I think is lovely too), not so sure about Montmorancy tho

Clement (but obv already have a 'C' name) - I like this

BunnyLebowski · 16/02/2010 11:23

Ok your taste is definitely not my territory but I'll give my tuppence worth anyway

Beau - a bit too 'celebrity try-hard' to fit with your other boys

Beamish - as in the stout? Awful

Lux (means light in Latin) - Too similar to Alex in sound and just doesn't sound like a peoper name

Humphrey - Sounds like a name for an elephant

Orson - People will assume you're film buffs or that you like a crap middle of the road pop band.

Montgomery / Montmorancy - Montgomery (Monty) fits with your boys. Montmorancy is pretentious beyond belief.

Clement (but obv already have a 'C' name) - I like this alot.

diddl · 16/02/2010 11:24

Like Orson.

Could I suggest Hamish or Rufus?

diddl · 16/02/2010 11:26

Sorry, by "any thoughts" I thought you also wanted suggestions, not just thoughts on your names.

MaggieMaeve · 16/02/2010 11:32

Alex is so classic. I like Cosmo, but Alex, Cosmo and.. I think it needs to be an unusual classic to make Alex and Cosmo seem more like brothers.

Alex, Cosmo and Victor
Alex, Cosmo and Howard/Howie
Alex, Cosmo and Gus
Alex, Cosmo and Julius
Alex, Cosmo and Marcus (Roman classic!)
Alex, Cosmo and Dominic
Alex, Cosmo and Thaddeus

Beau - no. B.O. fgs
Beamish - this is a stout isn't it?
Lux - I like this but it gives me a more feminine vibe, especially as Luz is a girls' name in Spanish
Humphrey - no, he sounds like he has a blocked nose. It's very Geoffrey, bit serial killer-ish. NOT ready for Humphrey quite yet. Give it ten years please.
Orson - ok, heard worse, but it adds yet another style in to your boys' names.
Montgomery - Monty is OK. It's my favourite on your list but that's not saying much! sorry. Montmorancy is just taking the proverbial.
Clement - I quite like this. Very, very pretentious. Is he going to have his own art gallery instead of a play room?? sorry again!! just the images popping into my head.

LoobyLaBoobs · 16/02/2010 11:32

imo... i like orson the best

i dont think lux would work, what if you said "Lux looks nice"

Humphrey makes me think of a chubby smiley old man for some reason. Montgomery also sounds old to me.

clement makes me think of fruit.. clementine, and slightly girly maybe.

Beamish sounds like an adjective.

...do you have any others? When i read your 2boys names Rory came to mind for a third.

MaggieMaeve · 16/02/2010 11:34

Actually, Felix would work very well

Alex, Cosmo and Felix - that ties all the names in, stylistically. ( I know this doesn't matter at all to a lot of people)

diddl · 16/02/2010 11:36

Like Orson Edward,
Also Rory William.

Jethro?

whimsicalname · 16/02/2010 11:37

Wow! i wasn't expecting such a massive response.

We actually abbreviate Alexander to Dander (long story) though as he gets older, it's turning into Zander / Xander (I've never written that before, but you know what I mean).

Love the other suggestions. Thanks.

MaggieMaeve's suggestions of Dominic or Julius do go well with your other two.

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 16/02/2010 12:16

can I suggest Giles as a first name

and this goes very well with Edward as a middle name

PanicMode · 16/02/2010 14:17

Isn't the correct spelling MontmorEncy?

We have Monty on our shortlist (would be Montague probably); we already have a Rufus....

I'm not that keen on your other ones tbh - Beamish reminds me of the local beer when I was growing up, Lux is a soap/detergent isn't it?! Beau is too 'Jordan' for me. I actually suggested Clement to DH but he vetoed that as being FAR too OTT!!

I like the suggestion of Felix with your others though - I think it flows quite well.

shoobidoo · 16/02/2010 14:58

I love Clement and Montgomery from your list!

How about

Alexander, Cosmo and Quentin?

maniacbug · 16/02/2010 15:05

Orson and Clement are my favourites, and both were on our shortlists (although Clem/Clemmy for short always makes me think 'phlegm' + 'clammy').
Can I throw another one into the ring? My current favourite is Herbert: Xander, Cosmo and Herb/Bert sounds good to me! Oh, and just thought, a friend of a friend called her son Bede - not to my taste personally but might go with your others?

mathanxiety · 16/02/2010 15:09

Beau -- LOVE
Beamish -- Beamish and Crawford is a Cork brewery and therefore no
Lux (means light in Latin) -- ok
Humphrey -- like
Orson -- NOOOO
Montgomery / Montmorancy -- both NOOOO
Clement -- LOVE, doesn't matter that you already have a C name, imo
