It makes me think of 'marionette'and I'm not sure the puppet association is a good one...?

Not mad keen, sorry.

boodleboot · 15/02/2010 16:26

I like it actually....prefer Marielle tho

hippipotamiHasLost79lbs · 15/02/2010 16:32

Not bad, first impression is quite favourable. I also prefer Marielle though.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/02/2010 16:44

I think Marietta Lucy or Marie Lucy would go better. You can then do Mariette from Marie.

Ziggurat · 15/02/2010 16:48

I think it is pretty. Also like Marianne.

Blanchet · 15/02/2010 16:48

It's sweet! I prefer it to all the alternatives here. Makes me think of the Darling Buds of May... wasn't that Catherine Zeta Jones's character?

CelticStarlight · 15/02/2010 17:31

It was a name made up by Ma Larkin in The Darling Buds of May - she said she thought Marie Antoinette was a bit of a mouthful so she shortened it to Mariette

Like it, esp Dutch version Mariet

bellissima · 16/02/2010 08:14

Never heard of a Mariet. Plenty of Mias, Miekes, Marijkes - all diminutives of Maria.

bruffin · 16/02/2010 08:23

I used to work with a Marjetta which I assume is the finnish version.

LuciaRose · 16/02/2010 10:23

I first heard of it when I heard the Dutch name, Mariet, but then also heard it on the Darling Buds of May and have also heard Mariette used in France. Marielle is also lovely, but does remind me a bit of Marilyn.

Thanks!

don't like it much,,,,, but tweak it slightly, Marianne and that is very classy

I also like Maribel, quite spanish sounding.

birdofthenorth · 17/02/2010 15:29

Makes me think Marriot Hotels, sorry!

Bumnoise · 17/02/2010 15:46

It's very pretty

mathanxiety · 17/02/2010 15:50

Maribel is a popular Puerto Rican name. Mariel is lovely, imo, and Marianne also. Mariette I don't like so much -- I also think of the hotels.

serinBrightside · 18/02/2010 00:06

Scary puppets....sorry.

Caitni · 18/02/2010 00:12

My mum's called Marietta - a contraction of marie antoinette (long story behind how she ended up with that name ). I love it but it's unusual and she gets misspellings and mispronunciations all the time, even from family and friends, which is annoying . Still, I do love it. I've also come across it in Spanish speaking countries as a form of Maria...

LaRagazzaInglese · 18/02/2010 00:31

I like it, i suppose marionette sort of came to mind but that's nice like a doll. Anyway Jacob makes me think of crackers. It's not such a negative association.

LaRagazzaInglese · 18/02/2010 00:32

I prefer Mariette Lucy to Lucy Mariette.

babyicebean · 18/02/2010 00:46

I like Marietta but himself vetoed it as I am a Marie-Anne and he said it was too similar.

solo · 18/02/2010 00:59

I know a lovely Marietta, known as Etta. The A on the end softens it a lot imo. Not quite so keen on Mariette

getawiggleon · 20/02/2010 22:36

Makes me think of puppet too, I'm afraid. Prefer Marianne or Harriet

AllieW · 21/02/2010 08:33

It's the name of the girl in Darling Buds of May, if I recall correctly. Quite sweet, but I too think of the puppet.

Peaceflower · 21/02/2010 08:45

Lovely name, go for it if you like it.

You might want to bear in mind though that she'll forever be asked to spell it, so it might be best to avoid if you have a surname that needs spelling too! [bitter experience emoticon]
