Do you have to be really cool in order to avoid being bullied with a name like Stanley?

Yes. Especially if your surname is knife! But don't listen to me, I'm not very keen on the old names revival!!

I have a Stanley who will be 4 next month. Never raised an eyebrow so far, in fact everyone always says they love it. However we live in London where pretty much anything goes (other names in his pre school class are Ned, Jed, Otis, Otto, Fred, Saffron, Betty, Dottie, Spike and Buster - all given names not nicknames)

Not an Olivia, Emily, Thomas or Jack in sight around these parts!!

It may be different if you live in a tiny village in Yorkshire but in London and probably other big cities there's always going to someone with a weirder name than your child. I think bullying has moved n from names.....

shockers · 16/02/2010 08:43

Stanley is a great name!

izzybiz · 16/02/2010 08:44

I love it but wasn't brave enough to use it as Ds2s first name, he is George Stanley!

AccioPinotGrigio · 16/02/2010 09:00

Love the name Stanley. DS aged 7 has a friend called Stan in his class and there is no issue with bullying as far as I know.

AccioPinotGrigio · 16/02/2010 09:04

twosofar we actually live in a tiny village in yorkshire. Apart from Stanley in ds's class there is a Xanthe, a Serin, a Herbie, a Lola, a Seth, a Yolan and a Zen.

So not exactly fitting the stereotype of us backward rural northern types.

twosofar · 16/02/2010 17:21

Accio, was not being rude about northerners -my Mum lives in North Yorkshire in a tiny village so it was the first place that popped into my head! Am also a born and bred northerner who says bath and grass not barth and grarse so perish the thought that I should be in any way dissing my brethren!!

littleoldme · 16/02/2010 18:24

I love Stanley.

serinBrightside · 18/02/2010 00:04

Accio......a serin???

Monty100 · 18/02/2010 00:08

Lol, it's so old fashioned it's cute.

That's no answer is it?

We deffo seem to be hitting on retro names here, so if you like it go for it.

BodyMashIndex · 18/02/2010 23:36

I love it, but I knew a Jack Russel called Stanley, and that name shall forever more be assosiated with that little leg-humping terrier for me.

Dillie · 18/02/2010 23:48

Fantastic name imo

It brings back great memories of my great aunt calling to my great uncle (Bianca east enders style) "STAAAANNNNN....LEY!!!!!"

We all hid at that point!!!

The 'Stanley' I knew was a colleague, way back when, who was actually called Richard Holloway. Gosh weren't we witty and amusing? But you know I rather like the name. Suspect there might be quite a lot of 'Stans' around in the future what with Stanislas as an E European name.

AllieW · 21/02/2010 08:59

Stan is quite a cool nn and I can see it making a comeback. I do tend to think of Flat Stanley, but I think that's my age! (And it's probably better than the Stanley Holloway connection).

JemL · 21/02/2010 13:46

DS2 is Stanley, and it really suits him! It is getting more popular too, so I don't think bullying will be an issue - it won't be such an unusual name.

welshandproud · 21/02/2010 14:10

I wanted Stanley for DS2 but DS1 is Eddie and DP said everyone would liken them to Sid Little and Eddie Large

Great name IMO
