That's MY baby name!

I am having so much trouble picking a name for my little girl. Everyone seems to ask me about the name and I am open to all suggestions and help. Hubby and I cant agree...

Now that I have asked 2 of my girlfriends for help with my short list they replied by saying "That's my baby name, I will be devastated if you use it!"

Its so unfair, now I am turned into a bad friend for unknowingly 'stealing' their name when neither of them are even pregnant.

What is the best way to handle this? what would you do?

Cool. Very impressed. If you have a name like Dulcie you can afford to get the serious arse if somebody pinches it!!!

MaggieTaSeFuar · 10/02/2010 23:07

scottishmummy · 10/02/2010 23:12

yeah, i was joking too! but the fact is, if I called my child a name which ranked number 417 or something, and then my friend announced that out of all the gin joints in town she liked the same name,,,,, i'd be a little

so perhaps the issue isn't ownership of the name, the issue is whether you are embarrassed about appearing to show a lack of imagination/or shameless copy somebody else's style.

Obviously it doesn't apply to names like isable and james and charlie and Emily.

pixiestix · 11/02/2010 12:22

But didn't your friends totally nick those names off Angelina Jolie? So fair game!

AllieW · 12/02/2010 17:54

Sounds to me like your friends need to get over themselves. Friends of mine have had children with names I had previously considered but it would never have even occurred to me to have attempted to veto their choices. You just discount it and move on.

Frankly, I'd be tempted to go ahead and name the child whatever you most like and, if it happens to coincide with one of their choices and they remind you of the conversation, blame pregnancy brain or claim that DH insisted on it.

nobody owns a baby name,my 3 dcs ds1 name dont hear much of now dd1 names popular and ds2 name, not heard anyone else by that name

Oh bless you!

When i was 38 weeks pg we had decided on a name for our little boy.

A phonecall came from my mother telling me that her sister had had a baby and called it MY BABIES NAME, she did not know and i balle dmy eyes our for an afternoon!

Nooooo how could she? I then came to realise that the name we had chosen was VERY popular and we reverted to dp's choice. I am now actually VERY happy i did that as i love my ds's name now more than i could ever of imagined. My Aunty now calls her baby somethign completely different day to day as said 'that name' does not suit him (rolls eyes)

If you love a name, go for it, nobody 'owns it', they are not pg, and by the time they are 'that name' may not be the one the choose.

Both my dd and my ds do not have 'MY BABIES NAMES'
