Isolde/Iseult....do I nip DH's idea in the bud right now?

We are ttc number 2. I am convinced we'll have another girl. In discussing names DH suggested Isolde or Iseult (the old English version).

At first I thought 'bah, silliness' and now it's starting to grow on me....

What do you think? At least she'll be the only one in the class (indeed, the village!)

ps- he's a great fan of Wagner and says I should be grateful he didn't suggest Frighilda!

Or Brunnhilde

I love Isolde but it's a good job we've got 2 DSs or Dh and I may have come to blows

How do you pronounce Iseult? I'm thinking Isolde is "iz-ZOLD"? I'm trying to say "Iseult" in my head and it's coming out like "result" minus the 'r'. I suppose you can get an idea of how 'workable' the names are in everyday life based on how close my philistine pronunciation guesses are!

bowbluebell · 08/02/2010 21:20

Isolde is 'is-older' (with the emphasis on the second syllabe)

Iseult is is-ult (with the emphasis on the first).

I think!

Know what you mean about it being 'workable'- thepoint of the name is that people can call you by it, not have to enter into a discussion about it!

You are saying what I suspected - Isolde good, Iseult odd (although DH has a Belimawr in the family so odd is par for the course)

There is an Isolde in my DD's nursery group. Think yourself lucky, I'm expecting DC2 in August and DH keeps coming up with greek-inspired names like Persephone! I find it's easier to let him ramble on and ignore.

i know a lorelei, she's beautiful

I like both (although they're off our list as DH vetoed).

I think there is also a Welsh version Essylt, which is pretty too.

jabberwocky · 09/02/2010 02:21

Hmmm, like in Rumpole of the Bailey?

Hulababy · 09/02/2010 09:40

I am not that ken on either - they sound a bit harsh to my ears.

Rhuidean · 09/02/2010 16:34

I quite like Hilde Sorry, thats not very helpful is it!

Lionstar · 09/02/2010 16:38

I like, would have gone for Esyllt though (welsh connections), which is in fact the origin of the name. My DD has a toy dog called Isotta which is the Italian version.

mathanxiety · 09/02/2010 17:02

I prefer Isolda to Isolde or Iseult.

KeyOui · 09/02/2010 17:07

I thought about using both of them, they are lovely but a bit tricky to pronouce.

Isolde is easier I think but does sound a lot like 'Is older' and Iseult is quite close to 'Insult'.

I prefer Iseult but I'm not sure I would actually use it.

LadyCressida · 09/02/2010 18:50

I do really like Isolde but stopped considering it because it sounds a bit like 'I sold her' which might lead to lots of teasing...

tattycoram · 09/02/2010 18:51

I love it. I know a lovely Isolde (grown up) and I think it's a very pretty name

crankytwanky · 09/02/2010 19:38

Love Isolde.
Have suggested it to DH, but he's said no.

Feierabend · 09/02/2010 19:52

Nah. Nip it in the bud. Hideous name.

cloelia · 09/02/2010 22:24

I know a young Izella which is, I think , a Cornish version; I like all three of the versions.

cananybodyhelp · 10/02/2010 07:30

I know a grown up Iseult (eye-sult with soft s) - gorgeous name.

AlbaRose · 10/02/2010 16:09

Both DH and I love the name Isolde but unfortunately our surname begins with 'Ol...' so we've had to discount that one

florence2511 · 11/02/2010 03:40

Isolde is lovely. She will probably be the only one in her class which is a good thing.

I also love Persephone

AllieW · 12/02/2010 18:25

I quite like Isolde - I think it's pretty.

I would like Persephone but a friend gave it to her daughter as a middle name to "pay her back" for the pain of labour (I'm sure she's joking!). On the same basis her son has the middle name Tarquin. Just to spite her, they both love their middle names!
