DH and I like both but which one is more acceptable/less embarrassing?

I don't want to lumber the poor child with a name that she'll hate!

OP posts:

Mathilde is more foreign and will be mis pronounced as Matilda.

Ondine · 07/02/2010 13:13

I prefer Mathilde, it's a bit more chic and grown up.

brimfull · 07/02/2010 13:15

Mathilde is wee bit pretentious imo

Ziggurat · 07/02/2010 13:24

I prefer Matilda. Does what it says on the tin.

My best friend's DD is a Matilda.

Chillohippi · 07/02/2010 13:26

Matilda.

Wolfblass · 07/02/2010 13:31

Matilda

HalcyonDaze · 07/02/2010 13:43

Matilda. If you go with Mathilde she will have a lifetime of saying "Matilda with an h".

It's not great when you ALWAYS have to spell out your name....I should know, as my DH has saddled me with a sn that nobody gets right. Now I always spell it out after I say it.....save the blank expressions.

Doozie · 08/02/2010 12:21

For the UK I would use Matilda. Mathilde is lovely (softer), but I would only use it if you were from or living on the continent.

mathanxiety · 08/02/2010 19:54

Matilda, less trouble, and nice nn possibilities.

Blanchet · 08/02/2010 20:39

Definitely Matilda. So much less hassle.

bowbluebell · 08/02/2010 21:04

I prefer Matilda too. It's a lovely name-pretty and sophisticated. I know two little Matildas and they are both beautiful!

Hulababy · 09/02/2010 15:22

I prefer Matilda. lovely name

sasamaxx · 09/02/2010 15:31

Def Matilda

minipie · 09/02/2010 15:33

I'd also go Matilda, just for the reasons Halcyondaze points out. Far less hassle for your dd when she's older.

Both are pretty tho.

JeMeSouviens · 10/02/2010 23:54

Mathilde, much prettier, presume you'll pronounce with soft d on the end, not the da of Matilda

AllieW · 12/02/2010 18:40

Matilda. I know two (3 and 18 mos respectively). The elder one is known as Tilly (which I prefer as a nn to Mattie since that sounds more boyish IMHO).
