What do you think of Angel?

What do you think of Angel as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Its DS's middle name, but should I have just gone for it and given it to him as a first name. He is likely to be a bit of a bruiser size wise (tall and wide), so I think it would be very cool.

I am so glad you stick to it as a middle name!

Thomas Hardy and the Vampire spring to mind, but apart from that, you just cannot call a boy or girl that in modern day Britain.

justallovertheplace · 04/02/2010 18:10

NO

morethanyoubargainfor · 04/02/2010 18:12

i like angel, but i always thought of it as a girls name.

diedandgonetodevon · 04/02/2010 18:14

Lovely if you are Spanish but if you are pronouncing it in the English manner then no, not "cool".

Rindercella · 04/02/2010 18:15

Not cool at all, least of all as a first name.

Smithagain · 04/02/2010 18:16

I know three Angels, but they are all girls. I know about the Thomas Hardy character, but I can't see it working these days. Sorry.

seeker · 04/02/2010 18:16

Don't be silly. You can't send a boy to school called Angel. And before you ask, you can't send a boy to school called Fairy, Rainbow or Sparkle either.

deliakate · 04/02/2010 18:19

I looked it up on a geneaology website - Angel, plus our surname - and there were lots of them. Mostly born before 1890, and very many had died before 5th birthday. Very sad.

Afik, Fairy etc aren't actual names. Angel certainly has been in use frequently, in the past at least.

Um, huge thomas hardy fan here - who in an hormonal-addled stage considered oak (a in gabriel) for her son.
I must urge you, madam, NO!!!

deliakate · 04/02/2010 18:22

Oh Gabriel was one too! I love Thomas Hardy also, amazing writer

The only one who can pull it off is David Boreanaz, sorry. Mmmmm...

But if you really, really, really, really, love it...still don't.

seeker · 04/02/2010 18:26

Ok, but people used to be called Shadrach and Abednigo before 1890 too - that's no reason to do it now.

BalloonSlayer · 04/02/2010 18:31

I think it's great.

In fact I think embarrassing middle names should be compulsory.

Doesn't anyone else remember the glee in finding out other people's middle names? OP, your DS's mates are in for a treat.

Rindercella · 04/02/2010 18:39

If you love Thomas Hardy, then I beg you, go for Jude.

deliakate · 04/02/2010 19:18

I always thought Jude was a bit wet. Tess resonates with me so much.

I suspect he will be very wary of telling anyone his middle name.

dawntigga · 04/02/2010 19:55

Erm, do you want him to get beaten up at school?

Chillohippi · 04/02/2010 20:00

No.

deliakate · 04/02/2010 22:12

I have never seen Buffy.....

We had an Angel at school.

New languages teacher called out names for registration and said "Angela", assuming it was a typo.

Titters all round, I'm afraid.

mathanxiety · 04/02/2010 22:37

Very popular boys' name in hispanic circles in the US. But that's not where you're sending your child to school.

Amapoleon · 04/02/2010 22:42

My dds maths teacher is called Angel, pronounced the English way. It is not uncommon in Gibraltar. Just over the border in Spain it is pronounced ang hel.
