No don't do it, unless you are Italian. It's a gorgeous name if you are Italian and very pretentious if you aren't!

shushpenfold · 03/02/2010 10:33

Agree with bonsoir.

smee · 03/02/2010 10:45

Not pretentious where we are - v.inner city London. I know two. One boy and one girl. Seems quite normal.

Bucharest · 03/02/2010 10:53

Agree with Bonsoir and Smee in that it's kind of wannabee posh, and ends up being quite quite the opposite.

Ondine · 03/02/2010 10:53

I love it, I think it's a name you can use without being Italien.

It's in the top 100 so quite mainstream now. I'd put it in the group of names like Amelie and Leo.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/02/2010 11:11

What Bucharest said, ime...

LuciaRose · 03/02/2010 14:32

I think of Luca as a girls name, as it reminds me of the Suzanne Vega song "My name is Luca" about a woman. I have heard it used on boys quite a bit recently. I think it may be slightly faddy, in the vein of Milo, Ivo and all those other boys names ending in a vowel. I think Luke is more classic.

berber · 03/02/2010 15:02

Ummm... 'My name is Luka' by Suzanne Vega is about an abused boy...

berber · 03/02/2010 15:02

(love Luca btw)

Ineedsomesleep · 03/02/2010 16:30

Heard a fab row once in a shop that sells Christening gowns. The row was parents, who had apparently forgotten how they spelt Luca on the birth certificate. They weren't the brightest pair.

It put me off the name for good.

electra · 03/02/2010 16:31

I prefer Lucian.

frizzylizzie · 03/02/2010 16:33

Ineedsomesleep, that's classic!

Luca is ok, I much prefer it to Lucas.

usualsuspect · 03/02/2010 16:37

I love it

MrsMalcolmTucker · 03/02/2010 16:39

Luca is lovely - friend's ds is called this, but I'd expect a Luca to have some Italian link, I think.

I do love it, but did not choose it for the reasons offered by Bonsoir and Bucharest (via smee)

I also liked Carlo for a while, but could not possibly justify it.

bruffin · 03/02/2010 18:33

The song Luka wasn't about a women it was about an abused little boy!

Goalie · 03/02/2010 18:43

Not to my taste, but that's mainly because my friend's dog is called Luca. I think on another thread someone said that a name that suits both Dog and baby is a posh one.

zozzle · 03/02/2010 19:23

Yep I think fine if he has Italian link. Not really sure if he hasn't.

mrswill · 03/02/2010 21:10

Bit chavvy and low end if used with no Italian connection. Beautiful name if you have some connection.

annasophia · 04/02/2010 09:33

Even in Italy, it is regarded as quite a 'common' name...

I don't like it at all.

sonniboo · 04/02/2010 12:35

I find Luca feminine sounding (probably because it ends in -a) and a little 'common' if I'm honest.

sonniboo · 04/02/2010 12:37

Carlo or Carlos is fantastic, on the other hand, especially if you have Italian roots.

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 12:38

I would love it but not being Italian it is a no go for me.

Plus it is the name of my friends dog.
