I don;t know any children who have their names abbreviated to initials, awkward or otherwise. Most people won't even know what his middle name is surely?

Pineapplechunks · 01/02/2010 19:35

I think most childhood nicknames tend to come from early years when their at home with you, before school years anyway so your influence on what he's called will be the strongest.

Once he's a teen or adult your influence on his name(and most other things) are out the window

thisisyesterday · 01/02/2010 19:35

no-one will call him TJ unless you do. honestly.
most people probably won't even know his middle name, i can prob count on one hand the number of times i've ever used my kids middle names! lol

if family do it just tell them not to!

ellymouse · 01/02/2010 19:41

phew! i thought who knows and uses peoples initials anyway? perhaps my dh just never got over the 80s! i'm relieved!

The only people I know who are known by their initials are people whose parents do it. (Tis better than BJ anyhoo.) And no matter what first and middle names you choose, they'll both have initials...

nlo · 02/02/2010 11:45

As a teacher, I have known two boys with their names shortened to TJ. But through the boys own choice.

TellMeWhatToDo · 02/02/2010 11:47

I think calling kids by their initials is an American thing. I can't imagine it would ever occur to me to do that unless the child/parent had specifically requested it. And even then I wouldn't like it.

I have worked as a teacher fr 10 years, in adult ed for 3 years and as a TA for a year. have come across many many children of different ages. In all that time I have known of two children where initials have been used as nn: JJ and SJ. Both were initiated by the parents, not via school or friends.

I know a girl called Tracy Jane and is known as TJ as she hates her name so much. She chooses to be addressed as TJ.

booboobeedoo · 02/02/2010 12:53

Maybe call him John Tiernan (but known as Tiernan), then you might not face this problem? Lots of my family are known by their "middle" names..

dottyaboutstripes · 02/02/2010 12:54

My in-laws did this with my DS and called him AJ (because apparently we had chosen a truly awful, vile name ) Thankfully DH spoke up immediately and told them his name was NOT - and never would be - AJ

mathanxiety · 02/02/2010 14:32

I know a lot of Irish PJs and some TJs and MJs -- I don't think it's completely an American thing.

I also know a JT, so John Tiernan mightn't work either.

What's to stop you putting your foot down and insisting on the initials never being used?

OhFuck · 02/02/2010 14:41

DS has the initials TJ, never been a problem.

ellymouse · 02/02/2010 15:06

i think tbh that dh is a bit scared of tiernan as he wanted uber traditional so he's winding me up and trying to make it more normal at the same time. i love tiernan though and i dont think its too out there.

I think it's nice. Not a bit 'out there'. You'd have the same initials if you chose plain old Thomas....

BettyButterknife · 03/02/2010 12:16

Think yourself lucky, my DH has the initials BJ, poor soul
