little boy next door is 18 months and he is Alex.

Bubbaloo · 30/01/2010 21:32

I know 2 Alex's
One is 7 and the other is 5
Both live in Essex.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 30/01/2010 21:33

3, all over 15.

spongebrainbigpants · 30/01/2010 21:37

fairi, we live in berks too - our DS1 is called Alex and we know loads (fourin his nursery alone). I love the name but wouldn't have chosen it myself as I have a really common popular name and hated always being one of two or three in my class/work/clubs etc.

But my happy hormones gave my dh the choice and that's what he wanted!

Personally I'd go for John Alexander.

londonmackem · 30/01/2010 21:40

3 in West London (out of about 20 children) all under 6 months.

fairimum · 30/01/2010 21:41

hmmm

That isn't great.... been looking at the top 100s and is dropping down the chart at the moment 19 to 34 last year... We are finding it hard to agree on anything at all to be honest and this one seems to 'fit' at the moment.... how old is your DS sponge? John is a family middle name (i'm not keen!)

I don't know any (west Wales, but until fairly recently central London) at least I know two but they are both in their 30's.I like it,lovely name.

spongebrainbigpants · 30/01/2010 21:45

DS is 19mths.

A fried of mine had a baby in October and also called him Alex so it clearly doesn't bother her and my dh thinks I'm worrying about nothing so if you like it go for it!

It really suits him, it's just that when I dropped him off at nursery and they said "is this Alex D?" my heart sank cos I got so sick of being called Clare S all my life!

Strix · 30/01/2010 21:46

Tis a fab name.

cookielove · 30/01/2010 21:48

ReneRusso · 30/01/2010 21:51

I only know one Alexander, who is about 5, NW London. v nice name.

Pancakeflipper · 30/01/2010 21:51

I know 5 all under 4 yrs and each one is delightful. We aren't Berks - we are Yorkshire. I know it's a populular name here but it is one of my favourite names.

NorkilyChallenged · 30/01/2010 21:52

I know 5, plus one Alexandra. All under 3, the youngest born this month. I personally would avoid, but I don't like names that risk being too popular.

fairimum · 30/01/2010 21:52

so far not as bad as i thought... all very very helpful

My son is Alex(ander), he's 5. I don't know any others, but his school isn't very big.

Two in DS's class (the only name that's doubled) and one in DD's class.

I also know of many outside of school. It's very very popular. John is lovely.

Bleatblurt · 30/01/2010 23:46

My DS3 (2) is an Alexander. Don't know any others.

cece · 30/01/2010 23:51

I wouldn't worry about where it is on the charts....

DD's name was ranked something like 500 when we named her. We know at least 5 other ones near us...

DS1's name - ranked about number 100, we know none!

DS2's name - the longer version is in the top 20, but he is offically called the shortened version, which is again about number 100. We know a few but it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Moral of this story - go for what you like and try not too worry too much about popularity charts.

For instance I hardly know any Jacks but it has been number 1 for years... where are they all?

poutine · 31/01/2010 00:03

2 in one of my children's class of 30 (year 2 so 7- year olds)

1 in my other child's reception class

Plonker · 31/01/2010 00:14

4 adult Alex's (two female)
7 children, ranging from 2yrs to 10yrs. Only one is Alexander.

Popular yes, but very nice.

thehappyprince · 31/01/2010 07:54

Lovely name and I don't know any children called Alexander down here in south eng. If it really bothered you it may be too popular, how about alistair which is the Celtic version?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 31/01/2010 08:00

only 1.

Thing is, you might know 23 of them now in a particular year at school, but it will be another 4 years before your child at school and you have no idea what people are calling their children who are born now. You might give up on Alexander because it was popular with people naming their children 3 years ago and call him, say, Jesus, and discover that this year happened to be a bumper Jesus year and there are 12 of them in your son's class.

You should just choose a name that you love. Alexander is not top 10 and as such you have a good chance of not meeting one everywhere you go. You have no idea how many there will be of any name in any of his classes/street/college - so just pick what you like!

fartmeistergeneral · 31/01/2010 08:07

I like the idea of a bumper Jesus year!!!

I don't understand the concept of not naming your child something because it might be popular??! Surely if you like the name then that's a good enough reason for choosing it, no matter where it is on the charts or how many might be in his primary school class? He's only at school for 10 or so years out of his life - what difference will it make who else is called the same name?
