River/Ash

Both are unisex, DH desperatly wants alexander as a middle name for a boy but isn't too fussed for a girl as long as she has a middle name. It's because he doesn't have one and want's baby to have a choice when they get older.

I'm realy keen on ash - as I dreampt it when baby was 16 weeks, but does it go well with alexander or is it too many a's? (last name begins with c)

I get that both are a bit hippy - but I don't care about that I'm a bit of a handknitted lentil wearer myself.

Baby due early Feb by the way

I like both. Ash Alexander takes a bit of getting used to saying though. How about Asher (means happy in hebrew) Asher Alexander is a bit easier to say. Maybe!

But then how many times will you have to say them together anyway?!

River is great. Especially when one's surname is Phoenix, but we can't all be that lucky!

orienteerer · 29/01/2010 19:17

River - No!
Ash - Yes

LynetteScavo · 29/01/2010 19:21

River isn't hippy anymore, it's boardering on you know what begining with C. I do like it though, and Ash, although it sounds short for something else.

Asher is fantastic.

I had a dream aobut the name Jayden...I didn't even know it was a proper name then, but thought it would be a good name for a boy. DD was a girl. Close one.

woodyandbuzz · 29/01/2010 19:23

Ash is fine as a nn for Ashley, but personally I don't like it as the full name. Reminds me of fag ash (sorry).

yama · 29/01/2010 19:31

I like both. If I had to choose I'd go for River.

mathanxiety · 29/01/2010 19:47

Both are fine, imo, although I'd go with Asher too. And both sound fine with Alexander (or Alexandra).

leothelioness · 29/01/2010 19:50

I like Ash, but have to agree with other posters that it sound like a nickname for something longer.

momofnearly2 · 29/01/2010 20:05

Alexander is a great middle name!

I like both but prefer River.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/01/2010 20:06

There actually is a River Ash - near Guildford innit?

Trickle · 30/01/2010 08:04

Thanks - I was worried it sounded too much like a nickname - but I can't find one of the names it is short for that I like, and I do get the fag ash thing but for me it's about the tree.

Maybe not River Ash then Ratherbeon

I think Ash is great as a name in its own right. Ashley is better as a girl's name imo.

Spacehoppa · 30/01/2010 13:58

Ash? Pokemon tie-in?

stinkypinky · 30/01/2010 16:58

Asha is the girls version - to hope and to wish (Sanscrit) I have one 3.5 - not a common name in uk, and people think it is unusual, but pretty (to my face anyway). People have also thought it was 'short for something', or a nick name.

Loving River, but a bit whacky for me, although am expecting a Willow, so not far off eh?

nooka · 30/01/2010 17:32

I don't like either I'm afraid, and don't think of them as being hippie-ish really. Well River a bit I guess, but Ash to me is more trailer trash to be honest, and forever associated with Pokemon too.

I don't really like any of the longer forms that much, but they are all better than just Ash, and Ash Alexander doesn't work IMO.

But I don't like children being named after things really.

Trickle · 30/01/2010 22:34

Sorry no kids as yet so didn't even know there was a pokemon ref

TBH got away with it with dh because he automatically connected with Ash from evil dead - so I think it's each to their own sometimes and I'm thinking you have a much better standard of chav/trailer trash than I'm used to.

I like Asha not one I had heard before, if it's a girl I may steal it - I love Willow but I'm very well known as a Buffy fan and didn't seem fair.

Well who knows! Pokemon has been very much in our life for about five years - consequence of having a boy I guess. But most of these things are very local - names can have totally different connotations in different places. You have to choose what you both like, then it becomes your child's name, and other associations only matter if your or your child's friends pick up on them.

cityangel · 31/01/2010 00:26

Could you persuade dh to go with Xander instead..

Ashley Xander
Ashby Xander

or

Joash Alexander
Ashford Alexander

or go for a girls version of Ash and if you have a boy then use it for a second child?

Aysha
Asha

Ash is a popular nickname for the Indian names Ashvin, Ashu and Ashish amongst my school friends.

Trickle · 31/01/2010 00:32

Xander Good idea - but then there's the Buffy thing again - gah!

I like Ash but not River.
