Has the name Lucas become too popular? DS1 due in April...

DW and I have grown up together always saying we would call our son Louis if we ever have a boy. In recent months we've become pretty set on Lucas. We reckon it goes really well with our surname, Grey. It also means we can call him Luke or even Louie for short.

However, having just read The Most Popular Names Of 2009 it seems that Lucas has been the highest climber this year, racing 24 places up the charts to make number 15.

This has put me off a bit. How would you lot feel about it's popularity (probably due to Eastenders and Spooks) and what's your preference out of Lucas, Louis and Louie?

Feel free to suggest alternatives!

I have a lovely Lucas and we are middle class professionals. I don't think it is 'downmarket'. I think it has risen in popularity rapidly and is a name that appeals to a wide spectrum as it has a classic sound and sounds friendly and approachable.
I like Louis too (not keen on Louie spelling). It might sound a little feminine perhaps and you may run into pn difficulties.
I wouldn't worry about a couple of down market comments. I have seen classic, Biblical names such as Benjamin and Joshua described as 'chavvy' on here.

AMongst the many under twos I know (my son is 17 months) I know of 1 Lucas (6 months old) and about 40,000 Lewis/Lewys/Louis. Also 3 called Luca (2 boys, 1 girl).

Of the lot, I like Lucas best and it seems least popular, around here at least (SW Yorks) .

If you and DW have always talked about calling your child Lucas, are you sure you won't regret it if you don't?

Lucas sounds like Mucus to me, sorry! I like Luca though...

I've got a 6 year old Louis, he's gorgeous and the only one we know. I have recently had my second baby & after 9 months with no inspiration (or should that be no agreement, we did have names, just couldn't agree!) we decided to give ds2 the name the Louis had chosen - Lucas William.

Yes I know they are similar which will be controvertial on here but TBH Lucas will probably end up Luc & actually I'm past caring what people think! I just wanted to say that you've got a lovely choice of names which go well with your surname (but would always spell it Louis as Louie makes me think of donald ducks nephews!). Good luck!

Our little boy is due in just a couple of weeks now!

Lucas is still our favourite. In fact, as we've been refering to him as Lucas for the last 4 or 5 months it would prove very hard to get used to anything else. I hope it suits him!

Friend of mine who just had a little boy also had her heart set on Lucas. She too was worried that it was getting a bit too common and decided to go with Luca as an alternative. Suits the little man to a t!

Luca I think is nice if you have any Mediterranean blood in you, friends of ours with Italian descent have a Luca who suits it however there is a wee one at the nusery who is a gorgeous chubby wee ginger lad who should have been a George or Hamish or Angus or something, Luca just doesn't sit right on him

Lucas preferable to Louis which I find a bit wet and Lewis up here it everywhere

To be frank (and don't tell me wife!) I prefer Luke to Lucas and I'll no doubt call him Luke as he gets older. But Luke doesn't go with Grey.

I'm thinking Samuel/Sam for back-up in case Lucas/Luke doesn't suit him.

Prefer Louis but do agree that Lucas goes better with Grey. Think both names quite popular though

I'm very anti Louis but I love Lucas. It has become chavvy I'm told but the only evidence I've seen for that is a baby on Hollyokes and a very chavvy man I know calling his son that so on the whole I'd still say lovely name.

I was going to call my son Lucas but I changed my mind in the hospital when it came to it still i'd have loved to have used it this time had three girls I know not called their little ones the same in the last few months. I still love the name though and if in doubt watch an episode of one tree hill (chad michael murrays character ;).) I'd grab it while you're the only one you know who has a son called Lucas.

Prefer Luke, but Lucas does go better with Grey.

Lucas is good and it gives you a couple of other options. No other children in my kids classes called Lucas.

I quite like Lucas. You could shorten it to Luc (still pronounced Luke) as in Luc Besson en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luc_Besson which is rather cool.

If you intend to pronounce the "s" at the end, go for it.

If not, Luca/Lucas is extremely popular and has been for a few years now.

Louis is a good name but I wouldn't write it "Louie".

I know lots of Louis so to me that's the more run of the mill name. I'm surprised to hear Lucas described as downmarket - it makes me think of the yummy man in Spooks! I agree that it would sound fantastic with your surname (great surname, by the way).

Lucien Grey is a bit too much like Dorian Grey. Love Marcus / Magnus. You're lucky to have a surname that would make Wayne sound classy.

Lucas is lovely and round here much more unusual than luca which IMO is trying too hard unless you are Italian.

Lucien Grey sounds like a Harry Potter character
I love the name Louis. I know an awesome Louis who plays about ten different instruments including a £1000 electric banjo so it has good connotations for me.

I much prefer the name Lucas to any of the others suggested here - I've heard of too many Lukes, too many Lewis' and I definately don't like the name Louis ( I don't think it goes well with your surname atall).

IMHO Louis does seem like a very snooty up market name.

yes I agree cockles definately think Luca is trying-too-hard type of a name unless you are Italian. There it is the alternative to Lucas, but it just does seem here in the UK that so many call their sons Luca and it doesn't always suit.

I don't know of any one callled Lucas at all. I do know a few Lukes though.

I don't watch Eastenders or Spooks so I hadn't realised it was becoming popular.

I really like it though.
