What does everyone think of the name Stanley (Stan for short)? DS is called William, so wanted a traditional name to go with that, but friends have already taken Edward, Henry, James, Oliver, Daniel.

I was thinking maybe Stanley Oliver George (DS has 2 middle names too)?

DH is still not sure about it. My mum just laughed in my face when I told her, but then her suggestions were Ptolemy and Xavier??!!!??

Awful. It's an old man's name.

I wouldn't use Stanley and Oliver together either because of Laurel and Hardy but I suppose few people will notice.

Ondine · 26/01/2010 11:51

I like Xavier a lot more.

Not keen on Stanley, it's a bit of a lads name, 'Stan the man' etc, similar to Alfie and Archie.

There's nothing awful about it though, so go for it if you like it. Just not my style.

Sunshinemummy · 26/01/2010 11:52

I like it.

gagamama · 26/01/2010 12:11

I know heaps of little Stanleys. I can't get my head around it's popularity at all. I'm not a fan.

tummytickler · 26/01/2010 12:18

I prefer Ptolomy!

SqueezyB · 26/01/2010 12:21

It's going a bit too far down the 'old names are back in fashion' route if you ask me... that could just be cos it was my grandad's name though so I will forever associate it with old people!

If you like George and Oliver why not go for one of them?

snurgy · 26/01/2010 12:28

Awful, it will date really really badly IMO. It's as bad as Alfie and will become just as popular. It's also from a surname, so in similar vein to Harrison et al.

No where near as nice as William, Edward, James etc!!

LittleDonkin · 26/01/2010 12:44

How about Benjamin? Little Ben and Will

LittleDonkin · 26/01/2010 12:45

Or 2 princes William and Harry!!!

Hullygully · 26/01/2010 12:46

Yes

Indith · 26/01/2010 12:50

My cousin has a boy called Stanley. I was at first but he really suits it and I rather like it now

DiamondHead · 26/01/2010 12:58

I think it's lovely.

becklespeckle · 26/01/2010 13:01

I love it!

My friend's DS is Stanley, she nearly didn't call him that because she was worried about what people would say but its the perfect name for him. If you love it then use it

ChickenInABasket · 26/01/2010 13:22

Stanley is one of the few names I really really dislike I'm afraid. It's just not a child's name IMHO! Lots of people must like it though, it seems to be quite popular here (South East)

But if you love it then go for it!! My parents hated my son's name so much they refused to use it for the first year of his life but I'm still glad we used it!

Ziggurat · 26/01/2010 13:23

Reminds me of Stan from Coronation St who, to my mind, personifies it.

MaggieTaSeFuar · 26/01/2010 13:36

not too keen. prefer freddie or archie.

doubleexpresso · 26/01/2010 13:47

Stanley Baxter.
Name of village in County Durham.
Very popular here.
Makes me think of old men propping up bar in Yorkshire.

Zeeky · 26/01/2010 14:00

Letthereberock - DH specifically wanted Oliver as a middle name if we went with Stanley due to the Laurel & Hardy connection!

Don't really want to go with Oliver as a first name, as DS1's godfather is Oliver and one of his best friends.

I really like George, but it is DH's boss' name, so he'd rather not use it as a first name.

I'm put off Stanley though if it is getting as popular as Alfie and Archie. And as a rule, I really dislike surname-type names like Harrison, Jackson, Cole etc.

Maybe it's back to the baby name books!

How about Arnold? It's traditional yet fairly hep.

momofnearly2 · 26/01/2010 14:44

I know a few little Stanley's that are 3yrs old and under. All of them are really nice little boy's. Well I'm not sure about the 4 month old but I'm sure he will be just as lovely!

hairymelons · 26/01/2010 14:49

Love it.

hairymelons · 26/01/2010 14:50

P.S. I know a v cool DJ and artist called Stan, it never seemed like an old man's name on him!

bellissima · 26/01/2010 19:14

We used to call a colleague, a Mr Holloway, Stanley, but then that's just showing our age.

Suspect that there will be a lot of Stans in future though, what with Stanley and also E. European Stanislav etc.

vanloadtovenice · 26/01/2010 19:14

I have a French second cousin called Stanislas, Stan for short - the French version sounds much cooler!

cloelia · 26/01/2010 19:51

if we had had a boy we would probably have chosen it as it is father in law's name; I think it is great and also reminds me of one of my favourite teenage books ; worry slightly about S O G as being potentially soggy but love Stan.
