Is Dorothy due a revival?

This may be a contender if this baby is a girl.
Is it due a revival do you think? I don't want to give her a fusty old name.

wouldn't be my choice, sorry

Wolfblass · 24/01/2010 22:04

Yup i know a few who have shortlisted it, and have Dottie for short.

yama · 24/01/2010 22:04

Strangely I don't like Dorothy but love Dorothea.

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/01/2010 22:08

Most definitely.

It is in the air. Have heard two mums say they were thinking of this as a name for a dd.

It would have been one of my top two choices had ds been a dd (6 years ago).

And I have given both my dc a top 5 name years before they became top 5 iyswim.

Infact, thinking about it, don't choose a name I would have chosen because we'll probably be overrun by them in 3 or 4 years time!

I think its beautiful (obv) .

Heated · 24/01/2010 22:16

Some ppl are always going to see it a fusty so it's down to whether you think it is or not. Know of a Dorothy who is about 3 or 4, a teen who most call Dottie and a stunning Dorothea who is in her mid twenties.

Albertine · 25/01/2010 06:28

I hope so! It's lovely, as is Dorothea. Nice nickname options too (Dottie, Dorrie, Thea).

MaggieTaSeFuar · 25/01/2010 08:24

I know a Dorrie. She's about 4 or 5. Beautiful girl, but my face had a wobble before i could quickly rearrange it/. not one of my favourite old lady names. i like thea though.

Dottie is nmsaa either. Maybe it will grow on me as I like Lottie.

bellissima · 25/01/2010 09:08

Well she might have lots of friends...

Colleague in banking named his DD Dorothea back in the 80s. Fraid the trading floor came up with Diarrhea. but that's boys for you...

dorothea is nicer

dorrie/dottie is a cute nn

dorothy is my middle name

cue years of "follow the yellow brick road" at school

people still raise eyebrows now if for some reason they find out, and that's just for a middle name

i wouldn't use it

but then i have just given dd2 an old lady middle name that she may well grow up to hate, so clearly i haven't learned - that said her middle name is one of the trendier old lady names, and i love it

flipsy · 25/01/2010 11:51

lovely name - I'm due a boy otherwise would steal it!

thedollshouse · 25/01/2010 11:52

I think it might be due a revival. It is a very pretty name and from the same ilk as names like Florence and Beatrice which are now very popular.

BettyButterknife · 25/01/2010 13:44

I love it.

Think Dot is such a cute name, but DH vetoed it with what I think must be the most ridiculous reason ever: 'What will her email address be?'

I know a Dorothea (7) who gets Thea and a Dorothy (3)who gets Dottie.

FWIW I prefer Dorothea and I also love Theodora

Skegness · 25/01/2010 14:02

It's coming back, for sure. Have met an adorable little Dot a couple of times.

Sunshinemummy · 25/01/2010 14:23

I love it and love the short forms too.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2010 15:19

I think Theodora is so much nicer.

hippopo · 25/01/2010 16:38

I like it but DH does not also our surname begins with P so nickname could be Dotty P's after the high st fashion store.

PS I also love it because of Wizard of Oz

birdofthenorth · 25/01/2010 16:40

My friend's middle name is Dorrie -similar but a little less old fashioned?

loobylu3 · 25/01/2010 17:39

yes, I do. It's a v sweet name- reminds me of 'The Wizard of Oz'

LuciaRose · 26/01/2010 10:02

Love Dorothy - such a pretty name. I am amazed it has not come back into style. I love Dolly as a nickname.

RnB · 26/01/2010 10:13

I rather like it - in particular Dorothea. My grandmother was Dorothy

Upsidedowncake · 26/01/2010 12:53

I've got a Dorothy. Hope it comes back into fashion.

Had to talk to nursery about not calling her Dotty - nickname is Dee Dee.

50ftQueenie · 26/01/2010 13:33

My mum is a Dot. If she hadn't been then dd would have been as it is a fabulous name for a little girl.
