i really like it and want to use it, but there is something non complimentary lurking in my mind about it. am i right or being silly.

when i hear the name Amy my first thought is
'pretty girl' followed by something along the lines of a bit tarty.

can anyone reassure me either way!

I like Amy. Tis a tiny bit blah though.
And I don't really like it on Corrie when they say it all northern: "Am-eh"

How about Esme? Desiree?

riojaguzzler · 26/01/2010 18:17

Hmmmm.... not a fan. Am a teacher and all of the amys that i've taught have put me off!!!!!

hippopo · 26/01/2010 18:35

I know someone calle Amie which I think is a nice spelling of the name.

butadream · 26/01/2010 19:43

Can I put forward the name Amabel again, I keep suggesting it but anyway I think it is very nice! I really like the name Amy, I think the meaning of being loved is what you want your child to feel.

houseworkhater · 27/01/2010 22:23

Though I wouldn't choose Amy myself, I think it is ok and definately inoffensive.

I had to laugh at your suggestion of tarty as I always think of Amys as being more demure, pretty but in a natural plain kind of way.

Two4One · 29/01/2010 11:42

I know what you mean. To me Amys are sickly sweet girls who wear pretty hair bobbles with twinkly bits on the end and probably have pictures of their cats in bow-ties on their desk when they're older. It's a simpering sort of name. And she probably wears too much make-up. Perhaps because she has self-esteem issues as a result of being given a weak name which has prevented her from making her mark in a man's world...

I could be thinking too much about it. But my guess is she would end up working either as a beautician or someone's secretary.

Only saying this because you are asking!

Two4One · 29/01/2010 11:43

BTW, Amabel???? Why condemn your child to a lifetime of spelling her name and apologising for the apparent typo.

clairebear88 · 29/01/2010 13:11

I think its a very pretty name and would suit a girl of all ages

Go for it

butadream · 29/01/2010 13:12

I know Two4One it always gets flamed. I still like it though.

clayre · 29/01/2010 13:37

I have an Aimee and she does not "wear pretty hair bobbles with twinkly bits on the end" shes a tom boy shes not keen on pink and not dainty or girly, not quite what i imagined she would be but hey ho!

Blanchet · 29/01/2010 20:54

I thought of Amy in Little Women too when I read your OP... not that I'd call her "tarty" (in the sequel she becomes a pretty impressive young lady imho) but I know she has a bit of a reputation since a lot of readers will never forgive her for "stealing" Laurie from Jo!

I really like the name Amy in a vaccuum - it feels old-fashioned and sweet - but nowadays there are so many young Amys that it's lost its lustre and seems more insipid. I also for some reason think it only suits a blonde! Amy Winehouse looks like the opposite of an Amy to me.

Maybe it would make a nice middle name - you don't often see it in the middle and you get a lot of name for just three letters

crumpette · 30/01/2010 18:01

I don't like Amy because it seems rather boring and blah imo *but I don't think it is tarty at all

Met a little French Aimee not long ago though and I did like that, maybe I just don't like Amy because I knew so many at school

wilbur · 30/01/2010 18:10

ditto avenginggerbil - Amy in Little Women did it for me.

auricace · 13/03/2010 10:18

My name is Amy and I love it. I was named after Amy Johnson who was a pilot in the second word war and the first woman to fly solo across the atlantic so that is a really nice connection for me. She was really brave and there was nothing tarty about her.

LadyGaggia · 13/03/2010 10:23

I have an Aimee. She is definitely not an "Amy" whatever that might be...

Somehow the spelling makes all the difference maybe it is a kind of synesthesia?

RachieB · 13/03/2010 11:21

agree it's ok but a but bland

prefer Esme,Emily,Amelie or even Sophie,Evie etc which is about as "girlie" as I would go lol

ellesabe · 14/03/2010 18:06

I have often found Amys to be a little obnoxious No offence meant to anyone!

plumymummy · 14/03/2010 20:48

My name is Amy! (I also have a brother called Ben, and neither us of have middle names-I don't think my dad was a good speller...keep it simple)

I promise I am not tarty or wear too much make up...and probably only my husband thinks I'm obnoxious!

Amy is a nice name because..
*It is short and easy for a child to spell
*It means beloved..ahh
*It doesn't get shortened-I always get called Amy and not a nickname
*It is easy to shout-AMY! comes out easier than "clementine!!"

Not nice because
*Lots of girls on jeremy kyle who are pregnant at 12 with their stepbrothers child seem to be called Aimeee...
*Popular (though is this becuase it is nice?)
*Amy in little women is my least favourite character!

But I think you will know when your little girl is born whether she looks like an Amy or not-my parents never discussed Amy and then when I was born-my dad held me and said "hello Amy" and that was it -and I was a pretty baby I might add,
