Has anyone ever (or at least in the last 70 years) called their baby Adolph?

Don't worry, I'm not considering it!

I was reading a baby names book trying to find something for DC2 and came across Adolphus/Adolph. It is a very small book that came free with a magazine (no, not the BNP newsletter) and is by no means comprehensive. So why are they wasting an entry on a name that surely no-one has used for decades? For some of the names they give celebrity examples e.g. Elton was apparently made popular by Elton John , but strangely no mention of the most famous Adolf of all. Is it me, or is this an odd choice of entry?

haha yes! Believe it or not this is something I rant about on a weekly basis. I work for a multinational and I'm currently working with a German guy (obviously!) whose name is Adolph. I'd guess him to be around mid-50s. So basically 10 years after the fall of Berlin his mother gave birth and as his parents gazed at him, enthralled and in raptures they said "oooh, Adolph's a lovely name isn't it?". The mind boggles!

DH and I were discussing this the other night . . Adolf surely must be unusable - I read about some American white supremacists who named their little girl Adolf

Myra obviously.

Think you could get away with Fred and Rose but not in the same family!

I was wondering about Madeline (Maddy) - which is a lovely name but has too many tragic connotations now?

There is a boy in the USA called Adolf Hitler. His parents are white supremicists who wanted a birthday cake made for him saying Happy Birthday Adolf and Walmart reufsed.

1995-2005 in England and Wales
Six boys with Adolf as a middle name
One boy with Adolf as a first name.
One boy with Adolph as a middle name

Several dozen with Adolphus as a first or middle name (I really don't associate Adolphus with Hitler, though -- it makes me think of Gustavus Adolphus)

The boy in the US's parents denied that they were white supremacists and claimed that they were "reclaiming" the name () (but had slso named their daughter after Himmler). The children were taken into care last year, IIRC (not specifically over the name thing, though, although I suspect that put them on the child protection suthorities' radar).

But another dictator's name is popular - Joseph.

Though to complicate matters, in Sweden Gustavus Adoplphus is known as Gustav Adolf. I suppose you might just get away with that if you belonged to a very aristocratic Swedish family.
