What do you think? His name would actually be John but this is what we would prefer to call him as my Dad is John.

Views on Jonty?

Short for Johnathon/John - love it.

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 21/01/2010 10:20

Friends of mine just had a baby boy called Jonathon who will be nicknamed Jonty. It reminds me of Enid Blyton books etc
I do like it though. Not many around.

gagamama · 21/01/2010 10:20

It makes me think of the guy off Cash in the Attic, and sounds a bit like 'jaunty' (have no idea if that's a bad thing or not), but to those who watch less daytime TV than I do, it's quite sweet. Especially if he'll actually be known as Jon.

Two4One · 21/01/2010 10:21

Ooh, I'm glad you lot like it. I googled it and got a link to an old MN thread which was a bit mixed to say the least!

I like Jonty and I also like Jonjo which my friend was going to call her DC if she'd had a boy (2 girls).

shoobidoo · 21/01/2010 10:23

I love it. Jonty is simple, masculine and not that common. Great choice!

boodleboot · 21/01/2010 10:39

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jonty....it seems a great twist on the classic John which i also love but think can be a bit boring.....I also like Jonsi and Jonjo....

NewYearNewKnickers0nMaHead · 21/01/2010 10:41

Don't like it, sorry.

Two4One · 21/01/2010 10:42

Name theft!!! If I see you at gymboree boodleboot... [shakes fist]

Love it.

In fact that one's of the few boys' names that's got me excited.

AM sure DH will veto it, though...

Two4One · 21/01/2010 11:23

Ziggurat my DH is a bit about it but he's mad on the name John so this is a bit of a compromise. I think he's going along with it in the hope that it'll eventually be dropped and we can call him John!!

My Dad is John and, whilst it is an excellent name and my parents will be cock-a-hoop about it, I just feel the child deserves a bit of individuality.

It sounds very 'boarding school'

Rupert, Giles, Jonty

hatwoman · 21/01/2010 12:37

my aunt had a west highland terrier called jonty. he was horrible. however i'm thnking it's quite nice. bit posh - but lots of names these days start off seeming posh but somehow mellow.

LetThereBeRock · 21/01/2010 12:49

No.

legalalien · 21/01/2010 12:57

It sounds South African to me. Perhaps it makes me think of Jonty Rhodes? I think it is a more usual contraction of Jonathan there, though.

sonniebonnie · 21/01/2010 13:10

I like Jonty and much prefer it to John.

greenday · 21/01/2010 13:12

Sounds like short for 'jaundice'

GrimmaTheNome · 21/01/2010 13:20

I met a very nice Jack Russell called Jonty this summer. He wasn't posh at all.

Its nice, as a nickname for John.

Bucharest · 21/01/2010 13:22

I imagine grown men called Jonty to look like Nigel Lawson (before he lost 15 stone)

Sorry.

Love both Jonathan and John though. Neither need to be dicked around with.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 21/01/2010 13:54

I a bit Rah Rah for my liking (sorry)

John is a great name - what about Jonas or Jonah ?

KERALA1 · 21/01/2010 14:06

Adorable - love the name Jonty. If he is fun loving and jolly he can retain it into adulthood if he wants gravitas he can slip back to being John. Also there is a very cute Jonty and dd's pre school but he is the only one Ive ever come across.

mathanxiety · 21/01/2010 15:15

Rather Jolly Hockey Sticks, imo. Prefer Johnny.

Ziggurat · 21/01/2010 17:24

Hmm, on second thoughts - I'm going to have to veto it as an option for us myself...!

Still love it, but DS1 is Martin, universally known as Marty - Jonty and Marty is just a tad too twee, I think!

Marne · 21/01/2010 17:30

I love it, its one of the names that both me and DH like. Shame we have girls .

diddl · 21/01/2010 17:56

I really like it-more than John or Jonathon tbh.
