DS2 is due early April and we really struggled with finding a name for DS1 and this time round we're finding it even harder!

We've got quite a long list and it would be great to get some of your opinions - feel free to be brutally honest! We have a very short and harsh sounding surname which is also a noun so lots of names sound a bit weird with it. That's the major reason for ruling out lots of names but these seem OK.

Aubrey
Elias
Aiden
Cambell
Cameron
Isaac
Finlay
Oisin
Sterling
Angus

What do you think?

Also like Isaac (I have one!). Or Finlay, Maybe Elias but not really keen on the rest.

eastendmummy · 20/01/2010 20:44

Isaac and Elias are my favourites too - just need to persuade DH as he's not so keen.

I like Aidan because of St Aidan of Lindisfarne

jkklpu · 20/01/2010 20:52

Like only Isaac and Angus, but then I can't stand surnames-as-forenames. Sterling isn't a forename at all and nor is Stirling, other than Stirling Moss. If you go for Aidan, I suggest you spell it properly.

eastendmummy · 20/01/2010 20:56

Thanks for the honest feedback jkklpu! I think Aiden/Aidan are both correct spellings but we prefer the latter.

We have a bloody awful surname so don't have a huge amount of choice, plus there are lots of boys in the family and I'm very keen for ds2 to have his own name as ds1's name is fairly unusual and therefore very much his.

Yep. also like Isaac and Angus. We ended up with a Fraser, God knows where that came from, a bit post-birth euphoric and said 'yes lovely dear', to DH's sudden idea. It's really grown on me, though, and suits him. I just get annoyed when people put an i in it! Aubrey sounds a bit pretentious to me, and have known a few rather 'lively' Camerons and Finlays. HTH.

pointysaysrelax · 20/01/2010 21:04

Aubrey - no, tis terrible. Some foppish ponce
Elias - no, american struggling actor
Aiden - Like Aidan a lot
Cambell - no, surname
Cameron - no, heard it so often I have totally gone off it
Isaac - not keen
Finlay - not too keen
Oisin - not mu cup of tea
Sterling - no. Just a bit daft
Angus - like Angus

So, 1. Aidan 2. Angus

PollyTechnique · 20/01/2010 21:06

Presumably that's Campbell?

From your list I only like Cameron and Isaac.

Do you think if David is elected PM we might get a run of Camerons and would that bother you?

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 20/01/2010 21:10

Aidan
Angus

and Fraser is great.

eastendmummy · 20/01/2010 21:11

Woops, typo, yes, Campbell

I did wonder that and don't fancy having ds' name associated with David Cameron but it's dh's favourite name so thought I should put it to the jury! DS1 is also a C name so that bothers me too.

Isaac is looking like a front runner which I'm very happy about

fergus and Hamish are also lovely, and a personal favourite of mine I offer you...Gregory.

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2010 21:12

Are you in Scotland or the east end of London?

I love Angus, hate Aubrey, and the rest are in between, but closer to Aubrey than Angus!

eastendmummy · 20/01/2010 21:16

We're in London and I'm not quite sure why the names are so Scottish! DS1 has a hebrew name - Caleb, and we didn't want two biblical names but there are so few names that go with our surnames and those that do tend to be good strong, Scottish/Celtic names.

Aubrey is definitely off the list after the feedback from this - I'm glad I posted!

maxpower · 20/01/2010 21:17

Isaac is the only one on there that I think is ok. Being frank, the rest of them are poncey IMHO x

tummytickler · 20/01/2010 21:20

I think Caleb and Isaac are lovely or Caleb and Elias - but I am bitten by the Hebrew naming bug - all ds have Hebrew names and will continue with that!
Also Sterling is OK.

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2010 21:21

There are some great Scottish names out there, but you haven't picked the best of them IMO.

Are you bothered about whether your ds' have names that go together or not? Isaac would go best with Caleb, but again I would say that there are better biblical names out there (eg Elijah).

eastendmummy · 20/01/2010 21:24

I have a nephew who is Elijah who is very close in age, otherwise I think that would have been very high on our list. The biblical thing has only come up recently with DH saying it may seem a little odd considering we're not religious in the slightest.

Why is it so bloody hard! Sometimes I wish we were having a girl so I could look at different names!

Lolbilly · 27/01/2010 20:03

Hey eastendmummy!!

My personal favourites are

Aiden
Isaac
Finlay (this was high up my list of boys names but DH wouldn't let me use it)

I think Isaac or Finlay goes best with Caleb. Boys are so hard to name! x

snurgy · 27/01/2010 20:26

I love Angus and Finlay.

Sunshinemummy · 27/01/2010 20:49

I like Aubrey, Elias, Sterling & Angus.
