Isla and Beatrix

Dh and I are having trouble agreeing on any names for our first DD. Last night we came up with two we both like:

Isla

Beatrix (although would pick Bea or Trixie as a short version).

I feel like I really don't know anymore!! Any opinions very welcome!

Beatrix is really quite lovely. I've never thought of that spelling as a possibility. We have Beatrice on our list. Bea is my favourite nickname.

Isla I find a bit wet and think it's very on-trend. It will be linked to this era.

AngryFromManchester · 19/01/2010 09:46

I think i prefer beatrice to beatrix, but it is not my baby

littledawley · 19/01/2010 09:47

There are three Islas in my DD's nursery (she is an Ava so I know all about picking names that suddenly become very popular!!) - it's a lovely name so I only mention it in case popularity bothers you.

I also know a lady with a 6mo Beatrix who is always known as Bea. Both are lovely names.

Thanks all - it's helpful to get some opinions . . .

I also like Beatrice and thought of it first but am being won round to Beatrix by DH (and am a fan of Beatrix Potter!)

Didn't realise Isla was a popular choice at the moment - have already discarded Isabella and Mia for that reason!

I like both names. Funnily here I don't know any children called Isla but I do know a couple of Beatrixes. Bea is a lovely nickname too.

nikkisbump · 19/01/2010 10:57

Isla is beautiful! I don't know of any in North London. My Mum is in North Dorset and knows none and checked with SIL in Cheshire and she knows none either. (I'm thinking of this name if my bump is a DD so have checked everywhere!)

passionberry · 19/01/2010 11:15

Fab, I'm in Cheshire! Thanks Nikkisbump.

I haven't heard either name round here but as it's my first baby I don't hang out with a lot of children at the moment!

I don't mind if it's a popular choice, would only worry if it was literally the top name for this year.

Isla must be one of the top 10 girls names around here (just south of cheshire). But it is a lovely name.

Don't know a Beatrix. Ds2 goes to nursery with a beatrice (but the whole world calls her Bertie). I think it works well as a little girls name and a grown up name.

Names are really hard and very personal - I still wonder if I made the right choice 7 years later! Good luck x

dizzydixies · 19/01/2010 13:24

Isla very popular up here in Scotland too

prefer Beatrice to Beatrix and love Bea as a nn

LittleWhiteWolf · 19/01/2010 13:31

Beatrix. Its on my wishlist for any future daughters I have, but as our DD is called Bridget it might be a bit odd.

I am in a place full of baby Islas, too, btw.

Tidey · 19/01/2010 13:33

Both very nice names, but prefer Beatrice to Beatrix.

PanicMode · 19/01/2010 13:35

Both increasingly popular I think - I know several of both (SE) - but equally both lovely. Beatrice (rather than -trix) was on our list too.

mathanxiety · 19/01/2010 19:24

Love Beatrix, and also both your nns -- Trixie is sweet.

pointysaysrelax · 19/01/2010 19:40

I like Isla. And I quite like Beatrix too. Unusual. (Not Trixie though.)

EatingSwansHorror · 19/01/2010 19:41

My DD is Ila (pronounced the same name as Isla)and before I get RIPPED to SHREDS about the spelling she is half indian and it is an absolutely valid way of spelling it in Hindi! There are definately alot more around since I named her it. I blame Paula Radcliffe and Frank Lampard personally. However, I still think it's flippin lovely!

mummyloveslucy · 19/01/2010 20:33

Beatrix is my favourate, and Bea and Trixie are both gorgeous too.
