I have a feeling what the answers to this might be, but can you give me your thoughts on Rasmus?

Scandanavian. For a boy, I'm assuming?

Don't like it personally, but it's your choice obviously.

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 16/01/2010 02:03

I'm sorry. I don't like it. It's a pretty big name for a little boy (not that I'm into "cute" ickle names either).

Are you Scandinavian ?

quasimomo · 16/01/2010 09:31

No we aren't scandinavian but just struggling to find an Englsigh name that we like or that isn't everywhere already. Quite liked the meaning of this one, 'loving' 'beloved', and I do quite like the possible abbreviated form of Ras, but I'm not totally sure either. Dh has a taste for very 'unique' names, usually with some sort of historical significance. You may not beleive it, but this was one of the best from a series of his suggestions!

Urrk...umm....not to my taste sorry.

DiamondHead · 16/01/2010 09:34

I'd wonder if you'd mispronounced Erasmus.

IsItMeOr · 16/01/2010 10:08

Do want to try some of DH's others out on us?

There are lots of more normal names with plenty of historical significance and great meanings...

quasimomo · 16/01/2010 10:27

Thanks for your replies. Honestly some of Dh's suggestions are REALLY bad so I won't even entertain them. I think he is just trying to wind me up most of the time! Some of the more 'normal' names that we both like (to some extent) are: Magnus, Stanley (although I would prefer just Stan), Sidney (I prefer just Sid), Morton, Tristan, Anders, Pierce, Fraser, Morgan, Lloyd.

I know that these won't be to everybody's taste, but any opinions are welcome on these. Some of the more mainstream names that we liked are now extremely overused popular, so we've ruled them out. Such as Lucas and Theo. Dh really doesn't want a commonly used name - not original enough apparently!

Hmm, your DH really seems to be going for a scandanavian vibe there, doesn't he?

Would you consider something like Peter, which has a lot of history, means "rock" and isn't used much at all these days? Similarly Richard.

suwoo · 16/01/2010 10:41

I must be in the minority as I like Rasmus. I like Rufus and Fergus too- any good?

this is who springs to mind when I hear the name Ras.

quasimomo · 16/01/2010 11:02

isitme thanks for your suggestions. I don't think he'd go for those though, although they are perfectly nice names and I have nothing against them, I'm not sure I would either. I also want to go with something that is less commonly used, but it is so hard to find the right one!

suwoo thanks for that, glad to know that we aren't the only people in the universe who like this name! quite like rufus but not sure about fergus, we would have to shorten it to fergie, and it would always conjure up an image of that woman from the black eyed peas...

quasimomo - no offence taken. I was just trying to think of names that have been popular in the past (Peter the Great, St Peter lol), but are not used much currently.

I think you and your DH may need to consider that you don't need your DS to be the only person in the world to be called their name in order for them to be unique. Uniqueness is every child's birthright.

Rasmus is a perfectly nice name, and extremely common in some parts of the world. As Ras, I would expect it to be a person of indian origin, fwiw. Loads of Ras's around in the world too.

quasimomo · 16/01/2010 11:49

Thanks isitme we understand that it isn't a child's name that determines their individuality Our dd has ended up with a now very popular name, and we don't feel that this has reduced her 'uniqueness'. We just have a preference for more unusual names in general.
