What's the consensus on these names? I'd like one of them to be one of my new DS's middle names.. (born this week) but not sure which. First name not yet settled but likely to be one syllable English J name
I speak Spanish/Italian so could get away with something a bit er, flowery

thanks

Luca is lovely!

crumpette · 14/01/2010 12:25

Yeah I like it, have often seen it referred to as 'chav' on MN wondering if Italian background means it is de-chavved I don't know any RL Lucas..

Lucian or Lucien, not Luca. Too hard, I think.

Skegness · 14/01/2010 12:33

All nice.

Ondine · 14/01/2010 12:58

All the Luca's I know are very un-chavvy!

It's a lovely name, I like Lucien too though not quite as much. Not keen the pronunciation of Lucian .

LynetteScavo · 14/01/2010 13:04

Congratulations on your DS.

I love Luca.

WorzselMummage · 14/01/2010 13:10

Love Lucien.

I used to like Luca a lot but have gone off it, it is a bit to 'try hard'

crumpette · 14/01/2010 14:27

OK so it's Luca vs Lucien (loo-see-an), I think Lucian might be pronounced loo-shun by many which I personally hate..

any more votes?

Luca

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 14/01/2010 14:42

Congrats !

Ondine · 14/01/2010 14:50

The correct pronunciation of Lucian is Loo-shun so if you hate it definitely spell it Lucien!

I still vote Luca btw.

saltcod · 14/01/2010 21:41

Luca

thisisyesterday · 14/01/2010 21:43

Lucien is fab, ds3 was nearly Lucien

i do like Luca too, although it seems to be gaining popularity

CirrhosisByTheSea · 14/01/2010 21:53

I think Luca is the most stylish. I have to say I agree with Ondine that I hate Loo-Shun so that would be out for me. I just think it sounds a combination of desperately aspirational plus just plain unattractive!

shoobidoo · 14/01/2010 22:09

Lucian (loo-see-an) is the most elegant in the English and German speaking world

Lucien sounds nice in French

and

Luca is Italian - where it is very 'common'. Personally I find it very feminine sounding, probably because it ends in a.

HerbalHolly · 15/01/2010 16:41

I think all of the three names sound like 'baddy' names from a film. I'm not sure why but I can't imagine a 'good guy' being called Lucian or Luca.
Not necessarily a bad thing though...

Bucharest · 15/01/2010 16:59

I'm afraid I dislike Luca intensely. It's common (as in uber-popular in Italy) and common as in common in the UK. I also wouldn't use a foreign name unless I had some connection beyond speaking the language with that country, otherwise it seems pretentious.

The other 2 are just too close to Lucifer for me. (and I think unless you are very posh the other kids in the playground would call him Lucy)

Sorry for 100% negativity, but I think I probably really like your one-syllable J name if it's the one I think it is!

tartyhighheels · 16/01/2010 09:41

Lucian and Lucien can both be pronounced loo-see-an or loo-shan (the latter being the way americans do it)

I like Luca too and as a second name how the hell can it be chavvy?

My son is called Lucian, people are always taken aback by his name (when down here we are in a world of Jacks, Tobys etc etc) when I tell them and then most think it is nice. We also spend a lot of time in France and they really like it there.

I think for a second name they are all lovely.

crumpette · 18/01/2010 11:57

Thank you for comments everyone, am still undecided poor baby will be nameless for a while...! I want to use one of these in memory of my DD who had a similar name who we sadly lost last year, so it's important that her name is in DS's somewhere. Think it will depend on the other middle name, not sure Luca would flow so well with an 'A' name after it

Thanks again

Yes, agree they sound like 'baddy' names - cos too close to Lucifer (which, actually, is a fantastic sounding name, were it not for the connotations...)

midori1999 · 18/01/2010 14:44

My nine year old's first name is Luca. I know it is popular in Italy, but I have never heard of another child called it here. I certainly wasn't aware it might be termed as 'chavvy'.

He has never been teased about it at school, although as a baby doctors receptionists etc used to call out for 'Lucy' I assume as it was so uncommon then.

I do think it is maybe a little effeminate sounding, an dit can also be a girls name, but I am just used to it now and associate it with my son, so to me it is neither chavvy or effeminate.
