Your mum is always right. Sorry.

devonsmummy · 13/01/2010 09:23

prefer Devon

OrangeAnge · 13/01/2010 09:46

I've not heard of it as a first name - I know it as a fairly common Irish surname.

I think it will have Devil associations though. Sorry!

ellymouse · 13/01/2010 14:52

I thought so
I feel like I've trudged through every boys irish, celtic and gaelic name in existence and have found none that that both my husband and I like.

Sorry! The Irish names are a hard one. Good luck - and if it's a name that you and your husband like then it could still be an option...? It's for you both to decide.

FWIW - I like Morgan, Dillon, and Kieran...?

mathanxiety · 14/01/2010 17:02

It's a surname, but I love it as a first name. I knew a girl named Devlin, and thought it was such a cool name -- her family were from NI and it was her mum's maiden name. I think it's nicer than Dervla which is a bit similar. I would definitely use it, despite what your mum thinks. What's wrong with a kid who's a bit of a devil? Makes life interesting

SixtyFootDoll · 14/01/2010 17:03

ooh no

BouncingTurtle · 14/01/2010 17:24

Read a book which had a female Devlin. Not really my cup of tea, tbh.

How about Derrin? I went to college with a boy called Derrin.

BouncingTurtle · 14/01/2010 17:25

Or it may have been Derren, not sure now!
It wasn't Darren, because there was also a Darren at college too!

FlightAttendant · 14/01/2010 17:29

...as long as surname isn't something like Karnett.

I don't know. I can't really get hooked on it tbh.

hersuit · 14/01/2010 18:19

i think it's lovely

EmilyGilmore · 14/01/2010 18:24

It's a surname.

seeker · 14/01/2010 18:28

Go for Patrick. Very unusual (out of Ireland, anyway) easy to pronounce and spell, good strong name that works at all ages and stages.

beccagrace2 · 14/01/2010 18:37

patrick is very popular where i am (sw), at least 4 in my kids school lots of connors too. i'm not sure about devlin either.

pointydig · 14/01/2010 18:49

it's a surname so I'm not keen

Paolosgirl · 14/01/2010 18:53

It's a surname which sounds like the devil.

Get thee back to the baby name books!

ChilloSTOPFOLLOWINGMEhippi · 14/01/2010 19:00

I quite like it.

guitargirl2786 · 14/01/2010 19:02

I love it.

If you like it then use it.

At least your kid won't be one of 1000 Alfie's or Charlie's in his class.

Paolosgirl · 14/01/2010 19:03

Yeah - and there'll be a reason for that

DecorHate · 14/01/2010 19:17

Tbh there is a risk that people might think you have called him after Bernadette Devlin and are a supporter of a paramilitary group

Paolosgirl · 14/01/2010 19:33

Crikey Decor!

Bloody funny though - I just snorted into my cup of tea at your post!

singersgirl · 14/01/2010 19:36

I also know a girl called Devlin - an American family with Irish-Catholic heritage.

skidoodle · 14/01/2010 19:40
