Middle names?

guitargirl2786 · 12/01/2010 22:14

Hi just found out pregnant with #2 and looking at how long it took to choose Ds's name I want to start early with this one. I just need middle names to go with our choices and I'm struggling.

My Ds's middle name is Alexander

So for a girl first name will be- Minerva

and for a boy first name will be- Haylen.

we used names that were in honour of loved ones, either friends or family - have you none that you would like to use?

congratulations btw

is minerva not a contraceptive pill?

that aside- i am semi ashamed to admit that our DD1's middle name was my dead dog's name.

we chose my closest friend's name for DD2.

guitargirl2786 · 12/01/2010 23:06

No, Minerva is a Roman Goddess and Haylen sounds nothing like Helen or Hayley when you say it out loud so yes I am set on it. lol.

I haven't a huge family, infact it's not even big so no-one to take names from. (Me, mom and brother, As well as Dp and Ds of course and that's it. lol)

I suppose I don't have to give middle names do I. Although I would like to.

There's just nothing else that sticks out at me.

Minerva Simone
and
Haylen James
??

dizzydixies · 13/01/2010 09:54

the name or a place/song/singer/time that is important/inspired you etc?

I'm a sucker for middle names that have some kind of story/meaning to them rather than ones that are just given for the sake of it iyswim?

mathanxiety · 13/01/2010 14:42

Are there any maiden names or family surnames that might otherwise be lost to posterity that you might like to use?

If you have a large family in the US you run the risk of being called a Fertile Myrtle (they rhyme in Americanese)...

I love Minerva though, and all things (and names) Roman.

arolf · 13/01/2010 15:56

we gave DS his middle name after the friend who introduced DP and I to each other. had he been a girl, he'd have had my grandmother's name as a middle name.

SqueezyB · 14/01/2010 09:29

I would go for a 1-syllable name with Minerva. Perhaps-

Minerva Jane
Minerva May
Minerva Rose

Haylen you could have pretty much anything. How about

Haylen Edward
Haylen Andrew
Haylen George

mathanxiety · 14/01/2010 15:10

I always think second names like May, Rose, Jane, Jean, etc. make the bearer sound like a ship.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2010 16:25

How about Mathilde, Marguerite, Brigitte, Celine, Ruth, Grace?

blinks · 14/01/2010 17:39

minerva COIL.

i knew it was a contraceptive.

MamaLazarou · 14/01/2010 17:45

I'm not down with the idea of giving middle names just for the sake of it. If you don't have spare second-favourite names to use up, or family members/historical characters you would like to honour, why not just stick with first name and surname?

"minerva COIL."

Do you mean Mirena?

mathanxiety · 14/01/2010 17:47

The coil is a reason Marina gets shot down on this Topic so often.

guitargirl2786 · 14/01/2010 18:47

PMSL at Minerva coil.

I think it's Marina/Mirena coil and as you can see I am not planning on calling my daughter that.

The name is MINERVA. The name of a Roman Goddess of poetry, art and wisdom amongst other things.

Ok well have a dilema. Dp has now decided he's not too keen on Minerva and wants Mia instead. Now I'm not keen on Mia sooooo

we've come up with

Minerva Isabelle Alexandra so Dp can call her Mia for a nn.

Is this do-able or am I setting her up for a lifetime of aching wrists trying to write out her full name on forms etc.

Still struggling with Haylen though although I quite like Haylen James as my brother's middle name is James.

I'm not really a fan of lots of middle names, it kinda makes each of them less special in my book. That's just me though, a lot of people think differently.

If you both like Isabelle and Alexandra wht not go for one of those with Minerva as MN?

mathanxiety · 14/01/2010 23:10

That's beautiful -- really, and Haylen James has a great ring to it.

MamaMimi · 15/01/2010 00:20

We used something to do with the month/day they were born in our dd's names.

You could use this to give you some ideas.

You'll have an idea of the month and could start looking into that - could you wait to see what day but have some ideas beforehand?

eg, dd1, born on a Tuesday, middle name Grace
'Tuesday's child is full of grace'
Her first name is the birthstone of the month she was born in.

Probably easier with girls cos you have month flowers and birthstones to go at which are more feminine on the whole, although some stones may give you names that could be used for boys, particularly as the first name is quite an unusual one aswell.

If your DS's middle name is Alexander, then I wouldn't use Alexandra for a DD's middle name, UNLESS it is a family name that you have chosen for that reason.

I love Minerva though.
What about Minerva Iris?

Haylen - not keen at all but hey, your choice. So long as you don't have Van as a middle name! I think Haylen James was a good suggestion.
What about Haylen Thor?

DS has 2 middle names - one is DH's dad's middle name (neither of us liked his first name) and the second is my rare maiden name. Grandparents' names are always a useful source, ime.
