Maggie? Or does it have to be Margaret?

I love the name Maggie but hate the name Margaret! But, I've always had a pet hate of nicknames as 1st names, such as Charlie, Archie, Billy etc...

What could Maggie be short for apart from Margaret? I've toyed with the idea of Magdalene or Magdalena, can't think of any others. Or would you just use it as a name as it is?

I love the name Maggie and it was high up on our list.

I would have just used it as it is but a friend of mine is considering calling her daughter Margot and using Maggie as a nn. Any help?

Hulababy · 11/01/2010 20:25

Maggie is a nn for me, rather than a full name.

myredcardigan · 11/01/2010 21:01

I love Maggie but it would need to be Margaret for me.
However, that's just me. Other people are more than happy with NN as 'full' names so if you're happy, go for it. Names are so personal.

Margot?

Magnolia?

Doozie · 12/01/2010 12:29

It would have to be the full version for me too.

I like Magdalene

Margot is lovely - knew a gorgeous one
Marguerite - French version sounds softer than Margaret.

greenday · 12/01/2010 12:43

I've known this friend to be Maggie all along and just assumed her name was short for Margaret. Turned out her full name is 'Magnolia' .. I laughed out loud thinking it was a joke only to find her serious and I guess, not laughing. Blush!

wearthefoxhat · 12/01/2010 13:35

I have a Maggie
My grandmother thought she should be called Margaret, as Maggie was a nn, but it really suits her.

randomimposter · 12/01/2010 13:37

Margot or Marguerite for me... but LOVE Maggie as a NN.... but agree think it's important to have a more grown - up name.

My DS is Billy for now, but William Arthur for when he is PM...

SqueezyB · 13/01/2010 14:00

Thanks for the opinions everyone - we have decided that rules are made to be broken (especially self-imposed rules!) So if it's a girl she will be Maggie May. And don't mention Rod Stewart - we know and we don't care! Middle name has to be May for my MIL.

I figure the NN as full name thing is so common now, by the time our kids are grown up it won't be so important to have a 'proper' name.

Plus it goes nicely with DD's name - Polly and Maggie

My two are Molly and Maisie - both derivatives of Margsret which I had no idea about - have theoretically given both my girls the same name!

motherlovebone · 13/01/2010 14:17

Margarita.
Love it.

I love the name Maggie, I think it stands alone. I would probably put Margaret on the birth cert though, just in case something happens like a serial killer called maggie comes along, or maggie is the new jordan... who knows.

obviously this could happen to any name. I just like the idea of having the option to go back to the drawing board and extract a new nick name. It hands back some control to the bearer of the name.

Polly and Maggie are lovely together (maggie is not my real name btw, just a name I like.)

Magaly

popular name in europe (excl uk) as there is a saint called Magaly. I'm linking it to portugal for some reason.

nope, she's just Polly Never heard of it as short for Pauline, though I did read it was a pet name for Mary once upon a time...

Our 3yo DD is Margaret after her gran, who didn't live to see her grandchildren. Wasn't my first choice but we felt it was the only choice. I've grown to love it now. We started off calling her Margie (hard G, possibly a West Country thing?) but DD now insists on being called Margaret. Whenever I call her name in a public place at least 3 pensioners answer me...

LLJ4 · 08/03/2010 13:53

Marguerite gets my vote.

I also love Peggy as a nn for Marguerite.
