traditional girls name wanted

Our daughter is due in May, we have a ds, Robert, our surname is two syllables and starts with a B.

I love Elizabeth(not sure if too popular with the lizzies and libbys) Constance, Susan and Mary but dh likes the more popular ones like Amelia, Isobel and Olivia.

I would never pick a name from the top ten no matter how much I liked it.

Can anyone offer a traditional pretty name that isn't too out there or too popular?

Thanks

Anna is my DD2's name and I was shocked to find that it isn't in the top 100. Everyone seems to love it.

I do adore Elizabeth. I have two daughters and still can't quite remember why neither of them are called Elizabeth! It doesn't have to be shortened in any way and I don't know a single child of this name.

MummyDoIt · 11/01/2010 17:57

If I'd had a DD, she'd have been Anna. I love it. I also came across a Phoebe this week and love that.

SE13Mummy · 11/01/2010 19:25

I think our DDs' names fit the bill: Harriet and Miriam...

Also liking Rachel and Katherine

Margaret, Ann(a)(e), Louise, Frances, Jessica, Christine, Elaine, Mari(e)(a), Claire, Eleanor, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Monica, Annabel, Beatrice, Fiona, Harriet, Nicol(e)(a).

Struggling for more just now.

Marianne
Juliet- my fave at the mo
Annabel
Susannah/Susie
Christobel (too self-important?, tis a bit! but I love it)
Rachel - why aren't some of the hannahs called Rachel?
Eleanor - prefer Ellen though
Margaret(Margot/Greta/Maggie)
Vivien
Beatrice
Jane - I like its simplicity. It would stand out NOW amongst the Graces. Obviously a 40 year old Jane wouldn't make me go oooooh, but on a child, I would think it was a bit different!

Ps, Susan with Susie for short would be so refreshing. I think Susie would carry her through quite nicely 'til she was a teenager, and then it's quite possible Susan might have begun to come back into fashion. Although, I like names that aren't in accordance with cyclical trends iykwim!

MaggieMnaSneachta · 11/01/2010 20:19

Robbie and Susie! they are very well matched 'stylistically' (that a word?) it works really well. I know somebody who had a Billy and bump was going to be Susie or Polly but it was a boy.

liliputlady · 11/01/2010 21:32

Out of your choices I love Elizabeth and Constance, shortened to Connie also pretty.

I'm a Sarah, hubby is a Philip so Philippa has been vetoed!

I love Anna but it doesn't sound right when I say it in my yorkshire accent!

Katherine was originally my first choice but I fear it will become popular because of Kitty.

When I see Susan written down I get all excited (we call my bump suzie so no idea why hubby wont go for it) I can imagine shouting Bob and Susie at Tesco's!

Juliet is so pretty and something I had never considered, thats definatley going on the list.

Well I second most of the suggestions on here - and also, what about May as a first name for a May born child? I realise that May/Mae only marginally behind Grace and Rose as a mn but it's a beautiful name and mns frankly are never heard until you get married.

petitmaman · 12/01/2010 09:09

Helen?
Rita?

SnowMuchToBits · 12/01/2010 09:14

I would go for Susanna/Susannah (which could be shortened to Susie if you like) or Juliet (which I love) or Catherine (lots of shortened forms there, Cathy, Kate, Cath, Katie, Kitty etc) or Elizabeth (which you could shorten to Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Libby etc)

Doozie · 12/01/2010 12:03

Robert & Rebecca
Robert & Louisa
Robert & Juliet - another one loving Juliet!
Robert & Josephine
Robert & Lucinda
Robert & Elinor
Robert & Lydia
Robert & Phoebe
Robert & Sophia
Robert & Clara
Robert & Emilia
Robert & Celia
Robert & Honor

I love Robert and Susie, but together they sound like siblings born in the mid 60s.
