We're sorted if its a girl, but if its a boy...

Having our 20 week scan and we're going to ask about the gender. I'm panicking that it might be a boy because we don't like ANY names!

To give you an idea of our style the girls names we like are quite simple - Alice, Lucy, Jessica etc.

What would you suggest for a boy? Our criteria are:

*To go with our surname it will need to be more than one syllable.

*We're atheists so don't want anything too biblical eg.James, John etc fine - Isaac, Josiah, Abel too biblical.

*Not massively keen on names like Jaiden, Ashton, Levi

Think I've got my fingers crossed it will be a girl! Help!

We had exactly the same dilemma - and then found out we're having a boy! So all those lovely girls names got shelved, and it took us months to find one boys name we liked!

Here's the ones we considered, in case anything appeals to you:

Joel
Lucas
Riley
Felix
Caleb
Owen
Lewis
Jonas
Rowan

I love David. Would have been my choice if my next one is a boy. Freddie is cute too. I know a few grown up Freddies and it suits them too.

We too have a one syllable surname so wanted a 2 syllable first name that was unlikely to be shortened.

These are some names we considered

Arthur
Quentin
Felix
Lukas

James and John are biblical, though (New Testament) ditto Peter, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Simon, Jude, Thomas (all the apostles, in fact).... Plus Joseph and Stephen. Also Theodore, which refers to loving God. And Michael, Gabriel and Raphael (archangels).

You're left with Anglo Saxon names like Charles, Edward, Henry, Robert, Arthur, Edwin, Edgar, Albert, George, or names like William, Alexander, Louis, Patrick, Cassius, Max, Milo, Quentin, or Welsh, Scottish or Irish names if you want to stick close to the British Isles.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 19:03

math I think it's fair to say that some names jump out at you as being religious:

(Christian, Elijah, Moses, Noah, Jesus), whereas some are more mainstream. Like John or Matthew

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 19:04

otherside

I like Felix

What about :

Evan

mathanxiety · 11/01/2010 19:16

Just hoping the OP doesn't go around saying something like "We called him John because we're atheists and we didn't want anything Biblical"

AnathemaDevice · 11/01/2010 19:22

Nicholas. The best boys name ever (IMO!)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 19:47

math good point.

Ironically, I really like the name Christian, and I'm an atheist too ...

SockEatersMummy · 11/01/2010 20:16

Thanks for the suggestions guys, something for us to mull over.

MATH The fact that we are atheists isn't all that important but I think that if we go for Josiah or Gideon which, as Jamie said, jump out at you as religious people may assume we are religious and I'd rather not explain that we aren't to anyone who brings it up for the next 20 years. One side of the family is religious so a very 'religious' name would bring comments from them and I'd like to avoid any awkward conversations IYSWIM.
As it happens I have a biblical name and like it, but its a very common name so it doesn't stand out as a religious name. Thats why I said James and John would be fine (if we liked them...) but something like Isaac or Abel is too biblical for us.

Jamie I like the name Christian too but we have never considered it as we have one already in the immediate family.

I really hope its a girl!

I think it's a shame that there seem to be no male versions of the "Daisy, Poppy, Holly" type, we thought Redwood, Oak and Thorr should be more common!! Plum Baby on Facebook have been searching for good boy names - worth a look!! Celtic names are nice - Alex, Callum, Rory, Hugo (not stictly Celtic?)

bogie · 11/01/2010 20:36

Justin
Dexter
Lewis

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/01/2010 20:53

Deirdre Rowan ?

(Although, darn it, it's the ArchBish's name)
