Noa for a girl (Spanish name)

We live in Spain and Noa is a girls name here that we love. I know Noah (pronounced the same) is popular in UK at the moment for boys and although we don't live there, there is a slight possibility we may in the future.

What i'm trying to ask is, do you see problems with this name and do you know of any other female Noa's?

I love Noa or Noah for a girl. DH says no. Go for it, it's completely beautiful.

MaMight · 09/01/2010 14:52

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Top of my list if we have another girl (and 20 month old ds would be Noa if he hadn't been a boy).

Be prepared for lots of helpful people to point out that it's a man's name y'know... chap with the ark...?

funlovingcriminal · 09/01/2010 14:54

Glad you both agree, funny that I don't like Noah for a boy though, why's that?

chap with Ark is Noé here in Spain thankfully.

Noa for a girl is beautiful. I find it very elegant and feminine.

I actually prefer it for a girl, probably because it ends in -a.

avaj · 09/01/2010 21:55

I really like that - very pretty.
What about Nora?

funlovingcriminal · 10/01/2010 13:06

Nora is nice but I think the 'r' changes it a lot, still prefer Noa.

very positive comments, no-one seems to see it will be a problem being a boys name too. Here's hoping for a girl then!

Met a mum with a daughter called this and she constantly got reactions as in England it causes confusion because Noah very much a boys names.

thegrumpallo · 10/01/2010 19:20

i think the fact it's a boys name could be a problem for her in future. still lovely though.

what about Nola? my sister is called that.

ja9 · 10/01/2010 19:25

Noa is lovely ... like the perfume...

MumNWLondon · 10/01/2010 20:08

My DD (6) is called Noa. Obviously I love the name!

Its a biblical name, with a hebrew origin, means movement, and its a different name from Noah (in hebrew Noach, with gutteral "ch" like loch) and the flood but from Numbers chapter 27 - the story is about 5 daughters who stood up for their inheritance - a great story as there are not many examples of feminism in the bible. Its very widely used in israel - its been the most popular girls name there for ages.

People often comment that its a pretty name - and because the spelling is different from the boys spelling doesn't seem to cause a problem - anyway unisex names are in fashion anyway. No problem with pronouciation - if people hear it they do assume that its a boys name and spelt Noah, but as I said this hasn't really caused a problem.

Anyway DD loves it that she has her own perfume! She knows other girl Noas and also boys Noahs doesn't bother her.

She did a summer camp a couple of years ago (North London) and out of 20 kids in her group 2 other girls called Noa, which I found quite amusing! At her nursery there were 2 other girls in her year call Noa - although there don't seem to be any now in her school.

nowwearefour · 10/01/2010 20:12

i think that as name with the 'h' is as you say popular for boys now in the UK if you were to come back during her school days it would be incredibly hard on her with teasing, boys name etc. personally i love the name too but wouldnt want to subject a daughter to it if there was any chance she might go to a UK school.

pinkmagic1 · 10/01/2010 20:16

Its a lovely name and think its a much better girls name than a boys. I don't think she would be teased as many names are unisex.

MumNWLondon · 10/01/2010 21:54

DD has never been teased for having a boys name (although only in year 1), lots of names especially short names are "unisex" and children are used to this (Sam, Jo/e, Andy, Alex, Gabby, Eli - plus lots more) and lots of children have names that are hard to pronounce which I think is more likely to lead to teasing.

The girl in her class who is teased because of her name is called Rotem and the boys call her "bottom" (it almost rhymes).

monkeycat · 11/01/2010 20:31

I know a girl called Noa - I think it's lovely , really pretty .

Go for it .

groovyolmutha · 11/01/2010 20:49

Initially I thought 'Noa' for a girl sounded very pretentious but it was ignorance really. I particularly like the Hebrew derivation and having her own perfume ... girls like things like that! I would worry that it might attract teasing around negativity (sounds a bit like 'No')but other parents with Noa girls do not seem to have experienced this so probably wouldn't be a problem. If you like Noa, Noa it should be.

ShoshanaBlue · 11/01/2010 21:36

I don't see any problems with the name. My friend's sister is called Noa. Like it's been said above, many names are suitable for both girls and boys. I think it's pretty and if you feel that you have a Noa then you should go for that.

boodleboot · 13/01/2010 13:13

this name is really really growing on me.....absolutely fantastic origens too....biblical feminism eh, love it.

i think i might put this on my list....and the perfume is gorge too....

quixote · 13/01/2010 13:23

i dont see why it would cause any problems at all. just people giving the obvious comment that they see it as a boys name - you can then simply point out that there are more places in the world than the uk....

spanish names rock btw

MumtoEliane · 13/01/2010 14:26

Can I ask where did you hear it? I am spanish form the Basque Country ans always thought Noa was a Basque name! Its very ver pretty.

funlovingcriminal · 14/01/2010 09:09

I'm not really sure where I first heard it. I've definitely heard it both in and out of Spain - maybe it's origin is Basque but that would be Spanish too, right? I like a lot of Basque names funnily enough.

Can't believe the positive responses..thanks for that...still very early days for me yet, and no idea if it's a girl or boy!

shoobidoo · 14/01/2010 10:41

I like Noa as a girls name.

I actually find Noah (the boy's name) quite feminine sounding, possibly because it ends with the sound -a, which more girls's names than boys' names do.

MumtoEliane · 14/01/2010 10:48

Well we speak a different language in Basque Country so Basque names are not necessarily spanish. For example, Juan in basque is Jon, Maria is Miren, Jose is Kepa (!) etc. IYKWIM And we also have names that don't exist in spain as they are just basque (from mithology) like Amaia, Amagoia, Iker (for boy), etc.

I am very pleased you like our names, spanish or/and basque
