Longer names for a boy

Hi all! I've successfully made it past the first 12 weeks this time around, so I'm starting to tentatively pencil down names in the baby book, ready for hopefully meeting my LO this summer.

DH and I are doing ok at coming up with girls names, but we're struggling with boys names at present. Any help anyone can offer would be appreciated! I did have Nathaniel and Zachary listed for a boy in addition to the names below, but DH has decided he isn't keen on either of those. (Though I might work on him some more. )

Below are the girl names we've agreed on, and the two boys names, to give an idea of what seems to work for us. If you want to comment on the ones we've chosen then feel free, but to be honest we're mostly just looking for boys name suggestions at the moment.

GIRL
Kimberley
Caroline
Tabitha
Madeleine
Elizabeth
Juliette

BOY
Sebastian
Leonardo

A few things to take into consideration...

  • The name cannot begin with an R, as both DH and I have that initial already.
  • Care needs to be taken around E's and L's too, as our surname begins Elli.
  • The middle name will be Sarah for a girl and John for a boy, due to friends and family reasons.

First child, so no sibling names to worry about!

So, has anyone got any ideas?? Thanks in advance for the help!

There are some wonderful suggestions here, thank you all!

Love Theodore and Caspian, persephoneplum! I'll run both of those by DH later and see whether he can be persuaded. I think I've tried Theodore before, but I know I haven't attempted Caspian.

I love Christopher (Kit!), Lancelottie, but unfortunately there are already several of them in my family, including FIL and a cousin. Still, at least I get to hear and use the name regularly!

Kimberley is mine and DH's favourites of the girls names. I've never heard of the Victoria Wood sketch though, thesecondcoming. Is it something that's likely to be often repeated and remembered to cause a major playground problem, years down the line?

I admit, I'm getting a little worried too by people asking whether inspiration for the name came from the toilet paper supplier, who unfortunately supply my workplace and many others. Despite popular belief, I didn't get the idea from having my head down the toilet for the past few weeks! (Inspiration actually came from having a lovely friend called Kimberley when growing up.)

I like Maximilion Esmee, but unfortunately my parents have a cat called Max! I get the feeling they might not be too impressed with their first grandchild having the same name. Gabriel has unfortunately already been rejected by my DH... Something about being too girly.

Though you've reminded me that we discussed Timothy a while back and both liked it. I can't remember why it isn't on the list... Might be the unfortunate South Park "Timmmmeeehh!" connection. Though I doubt anyone will be watching that still, by the time DC reaches an age where it'd be a problem in the playground.

Thanks again for the suggestions so far.

I like Sebastian (but don't like Seb) and also like Leonoardo (and Leo). Bear in mind that long names will inevitably be shortened.

I think that these sound good with John

Quentin John
Benedict John
Christopher John

I love all your names except Kimberley, very 70s.

Congratulations, hope everything works out.

Nathaniel
Alexander
Massimiliano

Jeremiah, Horatio, Cameron, Ferdinand and Alexander are some of my faves. I think Alexander would go quite well with a surname beginning 'Elli-'. I also have a soft spot for Vladimir and Orion, but they're not to everyone's taste.

I agree that it's worth remembering long names tend to be shortened - it's hard to avoid other people doing it even if you'd prefer to use the full version.

Girl
Imogen
Eleanor
Lucinda/ Lucy
Kirstin/ Kristin

Boy
Cameron (also gets my vote)
Curtis

cityangel · 06/01/2010 23:58

oh yeah scrap Eleanor I've re-read the brief!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

I'm not worried about the name being shortened - to be honest I expect most of the time I'll shorten it myself. The long version can be saved for special occasions, and for letting the child know when enough is enough-! When I was a child, nothing said shut up, stop and listen like my mother barking out my full name in that tone of voice.

However it means I need to make sure DH and I like both the long and short version(s), which is seemingly more difficult than I'd anticipated. This whole baby naming lark is a lot more difficult than it sounds!

Quentin is one I hadn't thought of, but I'm a little concerned it might be slightly too pretentious... What do people think? Nathaniel I've tried before, but DH doesn't like the NN of Nate.

Jeremiah is nice, but I'm not sure about it being shortened to Jeremy, which it inevitably would. I can just hear my friends starting up the chat show cry, thinking they're being funny.

Alexander does go nicely, but one of my good friends is Alexandra, NN Alex, so unfortunately I can't really use that. Cameron is nice too, but unfortunately has some emotional baggage as a bullying boy from my school with that name committed suicide when I was growing up...

Hee, I love the name Eleanor, cityangel, but yeah... It would get shortened to Elle (or similar) and Elle Elli-- would be a bit of a mouthful! Love Imogen as a name too, but DH wasn't keen.

Anyway, keep 'em coming, if anyone has any more suggestions! Thanks so much for all your help so far. I ran Caspian past DH yesterday and got it approved, so that's one more that can be added to the list. Hoping for a few more if possible.

How about Dominic, Tobias or Isaiah? If you got to www.nameberry.com it's possible to look up lists of names according to style/number of syllables etc.
