Lev

What do you think of the name Lev?
Levi is nice, but I only love the Le-vee pronunciation, NOT Lee-Vie - which i really dislike, and my guess is most people would pronounce it Lee-Vie.

So dh suggested Lev as an alternative. No confusion over spelling, and still similar to Levi - although does it look unfinished?

The only other name I love is Shem.
My ds's are Eli and Amos so we really want another Hebrew name to go with them (although it may be a girl - although pee on a stick day is Saturday - so really over thinking it here ).
I have 2 dd's too, but they have old lady names.

So Lev or Shem - which do you prefer?

what is an old lady name? i think your right about levi and people pronouncing it wrong, however in my line of work names nead to be pronounced only a few times before we say it the right way, so not to much of an issue. I don't really like lev, love eli and amos, levi goes well

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2009 20:08

i like Lev best

what do they both mean?

mankymummymoo · 30/12/2009 20:11

I LOVE Lev (and I dont usually like un-traditional names). Think its lovely.

smileyhappypeople · 30/12/2009 20:11

i know somebody called lev, his full name is levant (turkish, not sure if thats how its spelt but pronounced how ive spelt it, lev-ant). i like lev, have it on my shortlist but dh not keen. not sure i like shem though

tummytickler · 30/12/2009 20:12

Lev means 'heart', and Shem means 'name'.

So the meaning to Shem is not as great as Lev, but i can get over that!

I really like Lev, doesn't seem incomplete to me at all. Lovely, strong sounding name.

Not sure at all about Shem, I knew a guy from Tel Aviv called Shem. It sounds very foreign to me and unless you are Israeli i'm not sure it works.

tummytickler · 30/12/2009 20:35

I am not Israeli, but then i am sure a lot of people with little Amelie's are not French!

Like Levin...
Not keen on Lev (agree with Sesi)...
Don't like Shem.

hester · 30/12/2009 20:51

I like Lev and Shem.

What about Yishai?

tummytickler · 30/12/2009 20:58

Hester - Yishai is lovely, but it sounds too much like my dd's nickname! It would be very confusing as all family call her by her nickname!

I like Shem but I LOVE Lev.

Cyclops · 30/12/2009 21:21

I like Shem and Lev.

Lev was the birthname of Leon Trotsky.

hester · 30/12/2009 23:32

You have really cool taste in names, tummytickler! Can you tell us what your dds are called?

tummytickler · 30/12/2009 23:37

DD's are very unHebrew . They are 8 and 4 and called Iris and Pearl!

OP posts:
twilightclove · 31/12/2009 00:20

Sounds a bit like Lav, Trev, or a nickname. Not my taste, sorry.

skihorse · 31/12/2009 05:39

I work with a Russian-Israeli Lev and he pronounces it more like "love" - either way, it's a great name and he's a lovely man!

mathanxiety · 31/12/2009 06:29

I know a Russian Lev (and his little grandson of the same name). They pronounce it Lyov. (A barely audible y sound).

I prefer Lev to Shem (wasn't it Shem, Ham and Japhet -- sons of Noah or someone very ancient from the OT?)

hester · 01/01/2010 21:26

Iris and Pearl highly cool, too! I take my hat off to you and your fably-named children.

tummytickler · 02/01/2010 21:58

Just to let you know - I wee'd on a stick today and it was positive so I shall be back here a lot I think!
Thanks for all the opinions!
mathanxiety - yes - Shem was one of Noahs sons!
hester - thanks!

Oh congratulations! Really happy for you, and looking forward to hearing a lovely birth story with a coolly-monikered babe at the other end of it.
