What do you think of Angelique?

I found out today our baby bump is a girl. DH is French and really loves the name Angelique. When he says it it sounds lovely (his accent is really very sexy!). I have never heard it used in UK and would love some thoughts on the name, cheers XC

Hmmmm. It sounds a bit like one of those made-up names to me in English, though appreciate that it might sound better in a sexy French accent. Is she going to be bilingual?

Angelica any better? Not sure. And I don't like Angela.

ClaireVictoria · 29/12/2009 21:14

Hi, yes we hope she will be bilingual. DH is already putting together French lullabies and I know he will love speaking French to her ( I have a limited grasp only!).
We want to use a French name as we live in UK, but a name that sounds the same in both languages/accents.

It doesn't work so well in English, though....she will probably be called Ange as an adult.

BitOfFun · 29/12/2009 21:21

bit porn star, imo

SixtyFootDoll · 29/12/2009 21:25

Sounds a bit harsh in English, must sound so pretty in a french acccent

ClaireVictoria · 29/12/2009 21:34

I see the drawing board looming up close again! Thanks for all your comments. DH could suggest banana as a name and in his accent it would sound great!

I have to say I think it's GREAT. Check with a few English friends how they would pronounce it day-to-day before deciding though. If it's going to get said 'Ayn-jell-EEK' it would be a bit nails down a blackboard for me.

How fantastic that you have a legitimate reason to give your daughter a French name. Marguerite? Oriane? Brigitte?

midnightexpress · 29/12/2009 21:42

Amandine? I love that in a French accent.

ilikeyoursleeves · 29/12/2009 21:43

Sorry but it just reminds me of Angelica Kluck (sp?)- one of Peter Tobins victims.

So, I don't really like it sorry!

ToffeeCrumble · 29/12/2009 21:44

I went to an out of school club with one as a primary aged child and it was pronounced "Anjerleak" by the club leader. I thought it an odd name at the time and only later realised that it must have been Angelique!

Hopefully · 30/12/2009 09:38

I think it's really pretty! If I was remotely french, I'd be tempted.

FoxyRevenger · 30/12/2009 10:35

I think it's lovely!

I knew an Italian family whose little girl they called Angelica, but of course they pronounced it Angel-eeka.

So lovely. And you do have a reason for it, with the French Connection not like some mad people who name their kids exotic names for no reason.

MamaLazarou · 30/12/2009 11:04

It's lovely. I know a beautiful and Willowy (non-French) Angelique. It's a very glamorous name.

MamaLazarou · 30/12/2009 11:04

(Sorry for random capitalisation)

LastOfTheMulledWine · 30/12/2009 11:06

I don't like it in an English accent.

Delphine?
Ottilie?

LastOfTheMulledWine · 30/12/2009 11:08

I have a Mathilda and wanted Mathilde really but talking to a lot of English folks, they really couldn't make it sound more like a brand of tyre if they tried. It lost a lot in pronunciation somewhere in the middle of the Channel.

countrybump · 30/12/2009 11:12

I knew an Angelique when I was at school, I remember her as a very pretty and lovely little girl!

When we were a bit older her name did get shortened to Ange though, which kind of reminds me of the eastenders character!

sunshineandshowers · 30/12/2009 13:35

Lovely. Knew a girl at School with this name. Gor for it.

mummy2WLH · 31/12/2009 14:52

I know two thirty something Angelique's I think it is a beautiful name. However both were known as Ange not quite as beautiful..

mathanxiety · 31/12/2009 18:13

Very lovely.

muminthemiddle · 02/01/2010 13:22

I hate this name sorry!
I once worked with an Angelique-btw known as Angie-Leek by everyone and she was an utter bitch.
If you like it then go ahead but I detest the name.
