How popular is Alice?

We are thinking about it for DC2 due in a fortnight if bump is pink, but I keep seeing it is growing more & more popular - how popular exactly would you say?!
I have a Charlie (named after my Gramps) which is obviously quite a popular name so not hugely bothered, but don't want to use anything that is going to turn out to be number one of 2010 IYSWIM?

Alice is beautiful name and I would defo choose it if you like it and not worry about trends. Alice is dd1's middle name and both dds' 1st names have risen in popularity over past few years (as in top 10 or 20) and I don't give a monkeys.

Ineedsomesleep · 27/12/2009 13:17

Most names are pretty regional anyway. Haven't heard of any little babies called Alice around here.

I have one and know another (DD of another MNer)
I think it;s one of those names which is classic, rises and falls in popularity but hopefully doesn't date

MamaLazarou · 27/12/2009 14:40

It's pretty popular, but classic enough not to date, IMO. Unlike Evie, Ellie, etc, which are very much 'of their time' and will not age as well.

lolianja · 27/12/2009 14:59

I'm planning Alice for one of my twins (40 weeks the day after tomorrow... it ain't much fun) - interesting that you've got a Charlie, I posted the other day about an odd phenomenon in which almost every Alice I know has either Charlotte, Charlie or James for a sibling! (My son is a James).

I know a few Alices (most are 18-30), but it's one of those names that everybody knows one or two of, and that remains steadily a little way down the Top 100 and never really goes out of fashion. I don't know all that many primary school age/ baby Alices and I don't think it's that far up the Top 100 at the moment so there's every chance she'd be the only one in her class quite a lot of the time - same could not be said for Olivia, Emily etc.

blondiep14 · 27/12/2009 15:11

Thanks everyone, that's kinda what I wanted to hear! Popular in the classic sense of the word!
Lolianja - good luck!!
Interesting phenomenon that - wonder why...

my alice has a tristan for a brother

muggglewump · 27/12/2009 15:48

Tristan is the best boys name ever.

I just had to say that as I love it and DD (8) would have been Tristan and every time I mention it irl, people pull a face as if I had said it was Adolf.

As it was I had a girl and she's Niamh.

StealthPolarBear · 27/12/2009 17:25

Thanks, I think so!

muggglewump · 27/12/2009 17:27

So do I.
Never have had a chance to use it, and no more for me now.

It is truly the best boys name ever

MrsMattie · 27/12/2009 17:54

It's common but I wouldn't say massively popular. It's not a 'trend' name like Isabella, anyhow.

I like it. Very sweet and quite classy.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 27/12/2009 17:56

I love it, think it is a classic. DS would have been called it if he'd been a girl. I don't know any Alices at all atm.

softhoney · 27/12/2009 20:56

My Alice has a Freddie as a DB and I totally love her name. Pretty and feminine.

blondiep14 · 28/12/2009 13:06

How funny Softhoney if bump is blue it is very likely to be Fred after DP's Gramps!

loobylu3 · 28/12/2009 15:37

It's beautiful and classic (rather than trendy), always used but never excessively.

SE13Mummy · 28/12/2009 20:54

I know quite a few Alices ranging in age from 40 to 0. The school I teach at has one Alice per year group so it's popular but not overused. The ones I know tend to have siblings with similarly classic names such as George, Thomas, Michael, Phoebe and Charlie.

Rachybabes · 19/01/2010 11:13

We have an Alice and sooooo many peoplesay how beautiful it is!..it is not popular really, not like the current trend of Amelias, Evies, Avas etc etc...Alice is a timeless, quirky name, which we shorten to Lissy sometimes. It is a beautiful name xx
