I printed off the Scotland top 100 for last year, went through it with a highlighter, gave it to DH who also expressed an opinion and we narrowed it down to 5 names that are on both of our lists....

So....

Middle name HAS to be Montgomerie...Surname is very similar to Matthews

Shortlist is

  • Charlie
  • Scott (My favourite)
  • Craig (DH's current favourite)
  • Stephen
  • Ben

Any thoughts, likes, loves, hatreds, issues I've not thought about...

I'm 37 weeks and booked in for an Elective C-Section on Jan 13th - Girls name is picked and set in stone as we both love it.

I love them all.

I'd go with either Scott or Craig. Great names!

yama · 27/12/2009 10:41

Actually, Scott is my favourite.

somanyboyssolittletime · 27/12/2009 10:41

Love Charlie and Ben (sorry to disagree with you and your DH!)

Others are OK.

MrsMorgan · 27/12/2009 10:47

Out of the two favourites, I'd go with Craig.

Personally, I love the name Charlie.

Are you in Scotland? If so I would be reluctant to pick a name ending in T such as Scott as you will inevitibly get people who won't pronounce the t on the end. If you are elsewhere then this may not be an issue. From your list I like Charlie best. Good luck.

jellybeans · 27/12/2009 13:16
  • Scott not keen
  • Craig ok
  • Stephen ok, bit dated
  • Ben like
crumpette · 27/12/2009 13:40

Not Stephen or Craig

I like Ben or even better Benjamin, nn Ben

rubyslippedonastraymincepie · 27/12/2009 13:43

Benjamin - my all time favourite boys name

MamaLazarou · 27/12/2009 14:42

They're lovely. I'm not too keen on Craig, as it's a bit seventies (and Americans pronounce it 'Creg'). Prefer Charles to Charlie, and IMO Benjamin is a bit namby-pamby - I prefer Benedict.

forehead · 27/12/2009 14:48

I like Benedict too MamaLazarou

Hi

Sorry to come back to this to clarify and I know its an issue that divides MN..

It would be Ben or Charlie...not Benjamin/Benedict/Bennylicious or Charles/Charlemagne/Chalfont St Peters..

Its the shortened forms that we like and the shortened forms that we would use, not only in practise but on birth certificates as well...

Our girls name could be perceived as a shortened form of a longer name, but again, its just the shortened form that will be on her birth certificate - we don't like/want/use the longer version.

Sorry, like I say, I know its an issue that divides the place - some people agree with us, some people definately don't. Fortunately my DH and I agree on this one without any debate and the "shortened forms" are whats on the shortlist..

Just to expalin our family preferences...

ben and charlie i love...scott is nice too...not fussed on craig, cant imagine a baby called craig!! (maybe just me) you've chosen some lovely names..ben is one of my faves

saltyseadog · 27/12/2009 17:54

Ben or Charlie are great. Stephen is a 40 something year old man's name, and really not a huge fan of Craig or Scott (sorry).

brandybutterfly · 27/12/2009 18:38

My DS1 is Steven and I love it, he's the only one in the school with that name and he really suits it!

grumpypants · 27/12/2009 18:42

why montgomerie and not montgomery?

bellissima · 27/12/2009 18:50

I like Craig or Ben. Or even Stephen. Not so keen on Scott.

Stephen/Steven was indeed popular some time ago, and I knew a Craig in the 70s - but they are fine for a revival. And at least there won't be five more in the classroom!

KristinaM · 27/12/2009 19:00

if you like short names then defo Craig or Scott.

Bathsheba · 27/12/2009 19:29

Grumpypants - Its after someone special to DH and I and thats how he spells it...

OP posts:
grumpypants · 27/12/2009 19:47

oh ok, just wondered. Craig's nice.

saltyseadog · 27/12/2009 19:52

Brandy - my mobile phone address book has about 8 Steve/ Stephens in it - they are all ranging in age from 39 - 44! It was a very popular name circa 1970, that's not to say it's not due a revival.

brandybutterfly · 27/12/2009 22:21

salty sorry, read your post as negative against Stevens and wanted to stick up for them!

My DS1 is 7. He loves the fact that the only other Steves/Stevens/Stephens are grown up, and, as I said before, I love the fact that he's the only one in his school (have friends whose children are Isabella F, Joshua T, Freddie M etc but he is just Steven!!

glasgal · 28/12/2009 12:00

if it's stephen he will spend his life saying "with a ph not a v"- to the people who ask, most will spell it with a v without asking

Squishabelle · 28/12/2009 12:08

Why would most people automatically spell Stephen - Steven? I always think its Stephen.
