my baby is due next sunday and still have no clue what i will call him because i change my mind evry few days and hate the one i liked before.

at the minute my favourite is alfie but i dont know if he will hate it when hes a teenager. i think its really cute and i know that the name is getting quite popular again i just cant imagine a teen being called alfie, but dont know if it will be different by then as names change with the generations.

does anyone else think the same or am do you llike it too? thanks x

I think alfie is cool and once he has watched the jude law film he will love it as a teenager! just hope he doesn't get any ideas!!!!

LynetteScavo · 26/12/2009 17:42

Why would he hate it as a teenager?

I am a real traditionalist, so would go for Alfred, shortened to Alfie.

You're right, it's getting v' popular, which means he won't be the only Alfie at his school when he's a teenager.

BarbieLovesKen · 26/12/2009 17:52

oh I love it, love it, love it!!!...

rubyslippedonastraymincepie · 26/12/2009 18:16

I really like James but am not a fan of Alfie

Eddie is much better IMO

CitizenPrecious · 26/12/2009 18:19

it's a nice name- but there will be at least two more in his class when he starts school, I bet (same goes for Charlie and Jack)

Heated · 26/12/2009 18:24

I like James a lot. I'm a bigger fan of Arthur and nn Artie/Arty than Alfie personally, but Alfie is sweet.

I have nephews and nieces with abbreviated names as proper names; my nephew in particular dislikes his 'babyish' name now as it doesn't suit him as an 18yr old. He says he might suit it again when he's about 80!

LittleSilver · 27/12/2009 22:21

James is nice, but Alfie sooooo overdone imho.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 27/12/2009 22:28

flip it around. Jamie Alfred much nicer.

Georgimama · 27/12/2009 22:28

Not Alfie, please.

jlo1234 · 27/12/2009 22:51

Georgimama - why dont you like it x

It's just a bit overdone - like Jake - sounded cute the first time you heard of a 5 year old with the name, now every primary school class has at least 2. And as someone else said, abbreviations as proper names are a bit childlike when they're a 50 year old accountant.

littledawleybaubles · 28/12/2009 07:19

I love James (would have been the name for both DDs) but shorten it to Jimmy - I have never met a Jimmy in 5 years of toddler groups!! Always give the formal name too so that they can pass the 'boardroom/rockstar' test!

Hulababy · 28/12/2009 09:34

I like Alfie James.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 28/12/2009 10:16

I think it is always a mistake to give a nickname as a first name. Alfred James sounds WAY more stylish and distinguished and classy. And he can be Alfie all the time if he wants...or even Fred or Freddie if he prefers. It's nice to have options with names imo, nicknames can be arrived at which suit the child as they grow. You lose that option when you give the nickname as a full name. Plus sorry, but shortenings as names are chavvy. IMVHO.

MamaLazarou · 28/12/2009 11:32

Too nicknamey, IMO.

Squishabelle · 28/12/2009 11:39

I like Alfie but agree it has been absolutely 'done to death' - at least near where I live.

jellybeans · 28/12/2009 22:06

Too popular. I like short names but prefer ones like Ben, Zac, Max etc.

mathanxiety · 28/12/2009 23:54

I like James Alfred too. I wouldn't call him Alfie except as a nn. There are a lot of Alfies. I know a little Jimmy, age 3 -- he's adorable, the nicest little fella you could ever hope to have a chat with about trains and other things with wheels.
